Giants name Daniel Jones starting QB

The New York Giants announced that rookie Daniel Jones will take over as starting quarterback for the team’s Week Three game at Tampa Bay.

Jones will replace Eli Manning, who has led the Giants to two Super Bowl titles in his 15 years with the team.

In a release, Giants coach Pat Shurmer said "Eli and I spoke this morning. I told him that we are making a change and going with Daniel as the starter. I also talked to Daniel. Eli was obviously disappointed, as you would expect, but he said he would be what he has always been, a good teammate, and continue to prepare to help this team win games. Daniel understands the challenge at hand, and he will be ready to play on Sunday."

Jones was selected No. 6 overall in the NFL Draft, after playing for David Cutcliffe at Duke. Cutcliffe also coached Manning in college.

The Giants were initially criticized for selecting Jones so high in the draft. Jones quickly silenced the doubters with a stellar performance in preseason.

Jones completed 29 of 34 passes for 416 yards and two touchdowns, causing many of the former critics to clamor for the passing of the torch from one Cutcliffe product to another to take place sooner than expected.

Manning retained his starting job, but he led the Giants to back-to-back losses and posted his lowest passer rating—78.7—in six years.

Jones relieved Manning near the end of the opening week blowout loss to Dallas, completing three of four passes for 17 yards. He became the first former Blue Devil to play quarterback in the NFL since Sean Renfree came on in relief for the Falcons on Dec. 13, 2015.

On Sunday, Jones will be the first Duke quarterback to start in the league since Thaddeus Lewis led the Buffalo Bills on Dec. 29, 2013. He’ll be the first Blue Devil to start for the Giants since Dave Brown started 53 games from 1994 to 1997.
