FSU Football Gets Good News on Offense Ahead of Season Opener

Florida State will have one of its most experienced offensive weapons available when it opens the 2026 season this Saturday night.

Head coach Mike Norvell confirmed Monday that senior running back Tre Wisner will be available against New Mexico State. The Texas transfer missed both of the Seminoles’ preseason scrimmages before returning to practice last week, giving FSU another proven option in a crowded backfield.

Wisner’s status had been uncertain after he missed both of Florida State’s preseason scrimmages with what offensive coordinator Tim Harris Jr. described as “something minor.”

Norvell initially expected the veteran running back to return “shortly,” and Wisner rejoined practice last week.

“He was able to get back in practice here this week, and you feel confident about what that’ll look like here this next week,” Norvell said Thursday.

That confidence has seemingly carried over into game week.

Florida State opens the season against New Mexico State on August 29, and when asked during his game-week press conference, Norvell confirmed that Wisner will be available but did not elaborate on the size of his role.

"He'll be available," Norvell continued.

Wisner arrived at FSU after rushing for 1,734 yards and nine touchdowns across three seasons at Texas. He also caught 66 passes for 457 yards and two scores.

Wisner's return strengthens Florida State's backfield as it prepares for a physical New Mexico Defense up front.

Norvell said the Aggies will challenge an offensive line that is still working on its best combinations heading into the opener.

“New Mexico State brings back a good group defensively that has some experience,” Norvell continued. "They’re going to play hard. They’re going to play physical. They’re aggressive defensively. They’re going to move up front, show you a couple of different variations in what they do.”

New Mexico State's returning production at linebacker is led by fifth-year senior Sone Aupiu and senior Tory Gethers. Aupiu, a three-year starter and member of the 2026 Conference USA Preseason Watch List, recorded 68 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, an interception, and two forced fumbles last season.

“I really like their linebackers,” Norvell continued. “They are physical football players that you’re going to have to bring every bit of what you’ve got in how they play.”

Gethers started the final nine games and finished second on the team with 88 tackles while adding 4.5 tackles for loss and three sacks.
