Former FSU Football Defender Enters NCAA Transfer Portal For Second Time
The NCAA Transfer Portal won't open again until a 15-day spring window beginning on April 15. With spring practices kicking off around the country, there have already been some players who have declared their intentions to enter the portal later this year.
Former Florida State defensive back Sam McCall transferred to Texas A&M following his true freshman season in Tallahassee. After one year with the Aggies, McCall plans to transfer for the second time in two seasons, according to a report from 247Sports.
That means the Florida native will be searching for the third home of his career since entering the college level as a blue-chip prospect in 2022. To this point, he's been unable to consistently earn playing time at Florida State or Texas A&M.
McCall was limited to eight appearances with the Seminoles in 2022 despite entering the year as the program's top recruit. He only played 70 snaps on defense, recording five tackles, one pass deflection, and one forced fumble. McCall also earned snaps on special teams, averaging just 17.8 yards per kick return while struggling with his vision and ability to create space.
Shortly after the regular season, McCall hit the transfer portal and he landed with the Aggies less than a month later. The move didn't end up being fruitful as he spent most of the year in a reserve role. He appeared in 11 games, with one start, while totaling six tackles and a pass deflection. McCall earned a mere 110 snaps on defense.
Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher was fired prior to the conclusion of the season and replaced by former Duke head coach Mike Elko. Since Elko's arrival, the Aggies have added four defensive backs through the transfer portal, creating even more uncertainty about McCall's chances of earning consistent playing time.
Talented yet inconsistent, McCall's opportunity to realize his ceiling as a top-50 recruit is beginning to fade.
