Mike Norvell Ready to See Competition at FSU Football's First Spring Scrimmage

"This is going to be their first real action of being in Doak Campbell, and I wanna see how they react."

The Florida State Seminoles will hold their first spring scrimmage on Thursday, March 28, after four practices. The 'Noles are battling for spots on the depth chart, and many new faces will be stepping inside Doak Campbell Stadium for the first time under the lights.

A roster mixed with veterans, transfers, and freshmen, the coaching staff will have all eyes on the team's chemistry after two weeks into spring camp. Head coach Mike Norvell met with the media after Tuesday's practice to discuss the upcoming scrimmage and detail the workload he has planned for the team.

"There will be some guys that will be on, you know, probably a count of what we need to see and what it's going to be. There will be some necessary counts of, 'we have to get this guy this many reps,' just so we can see all the looks," Norvell said after Tuesday's practice.

A total of 13 freshmen and 15 transfers joined the Seminoles this spring. Norvell highlighted the influx of newcomers, especially the freshmen, and emphasized the significance of their debut inside of Doak Campbell Stadium.

"We do have a lot of newcomers, and a lot of those guys are freshmen that are coming in," Norvell continues. "This is going to be their first real action of being in Doak Campbell, and I wanna see how they react."

The first scrimmage of spring can give a glimpse into the finished product that will be charging out onto the field against Georgia Tech on August 24 in Dublin, Ireland. Although the team evolves throughout a season, Norvell said he doesn't expect a polished example from Thursday. He wants to see the communication between players and watch them play to the best of their ability.

"I just want to see guys go out there and play. It's really the communication element of it, guys on the field, the different groups. We're going to mix a lot of different personnel," Norvell said. "I don't expect a ton of cohesiveness just with the different personnel groupings that are going to be rolling, but that's a part of it. Who can go out there and do their job, make sure that they're communicating the best of their ability?"

The annual Garnet and Gold Spring Showcase is set to take place on April 20 at 4:00 p.m.
