Brock Bowers Falls out of the Top 10 in Latest ESPN Mock Draft

Georgia tight end Brock Bowers put together one of the best careers we've ever seen from a tight end, but will it be enough to earn a top-10 selection in the NFL Draft?

Very few things are ever certain when it comes to the NFL Draft, but as we get closer and closer to this year's event in Detroit (April 25-27), some things seem to be a lock. Caleb Williams will be the No. 1 overall pick, Marvin Harrison Jr. will be the first non-QB taken, and Brock Bowers will be a top-10 pick, right?

Not according to ESPN NFL draft analyst Matt Miller. In his latest mock draft, Miller has Bowers sliding to New Orleans at no. 14, selected behind players like Oregon quarterback Bo Nix and Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy.

The fourteenth overall pick certainly isn't an insult to Bowers but it would be a surprise. If you're going just by player ratings, it's hard to find a player in this draft better than the two-time All-American Georgia tight end. Sure, positional value will come into play here - tight ends just don't carry the same value as quarterbacks and receivers - but for as good of college football players as Caleb Williams and Marvin Harrison Jr. were, they weren't better at their jobs than Bowers was at Georgia.

The similarities in production from Bowers and Marvin Harrison Jr. are startling. In three seasons at Ohio State, Harrison Jr. caught 155 passes, totaled 2,671 yards, and scored 32 touchdowns. Bowers, from his tight end position, hauled in 175 passes, totaled 2,731 yards, and scored 31 touchdowns.

What Harrison Jr. didn't do was down-block defensive ends, trap defensive tackles, and lead block on toss sweeps. Bowers did. Talk about position value.

This is not a shot at Marvin Harrison Jr., he's a 99 overall, but so is Bowers. If he does fall out of the top 10, there's going to be one very fortunate team, and a lot of teams kicking themselves when they're watching him scorch their linebackers and beat up their safeties.
