Ball Distribution Becoming A Hallmark of Georgia's Passing Game

Georgia's quarterbacks have spread wealth in the passing game through the season's first two weeks.

If Georgia's offensive has done one thing right this season, it's spread the wealth in the passing game.

Through two games and 72 pass attempts, 15 different players have caught a pass; 10 wide receivers, three tight ends and two running backs. 11 of those players already have multiple catches, and as a whole, Georgia's passing game has registered 55 receptions for 687 yards.

The receiving stat sheet is a beautiful sight considering Georgia is without two of its best receivers from last season. Ladd McConkey is injured and is yet to even dress out. While Adonai Mitchell, hero on both national title squads, transferred to Texas in the offseason and is off to a great start this year.

No one has emerged as quarterback Carson Beck's "favorite target," but there are five receivers that stand out as Georgia's receiving leaders. Obviously, All-American tight end Brock Bowers is at the top of that list. He's up to 81 yards on six catches, though he did have a quiet game against Ball State on Saturday.

Missouri transfer Dominic Lovett is Georgia's current leader with seven receptions, though he's yet to hit on an explosive play and sits at 54 yards. Sophomore Dillon Bell is in the same camp. Both are getting open on hitch routes, allowing Beck to pass the ball quickly while picking up positive yardage.

One receiver who does have some explosive plays on his record is walk-on Mehki Mews. So far, he's Georgia's only 100-yard receiver and has five catches. 54 of those yards came on sensational touchdown catch-and-run in the season opener against UT-Martin.

Meanwhile, senior Arian Smith has just two catches though he was targeted several times in week one. He broke through against Ball State with a 37-yard catch to set up Georgia's first offensive touchdown of the game.

The distribution will continue as players like McConkey return from preseason injuries. Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint made his 2023 debut Saturday with a touchdown catch in the second quarter. Jackson Meeks didn't catch a pass against Ball State, but he did get on the field in the second half. True freshman tight end Lawson Luckie is still out with an injury.

Georgia opening the playbook against better competition should help other receivers make more of an impact as well. Mississippi State transfer Rara Thomas, and sophomore C.J. Smith only have three catches each, but they were all impressive plays.
