What to Make of Georgia's Recent Losing Streak

After suffering another disappointing loss, is it time to start panicking about Mike White's program?

Mike White's first season as the Georgia basketball head coach has been a tale of two halves. After surpassing last year's win total in just 10 games and a promising 3-1 start in SEC play, the Bulldogs have now lost 6 out of 7 games and are headed toward their toughest stretch of the season. With the likelihood of more losses coming, what should Bulldog fan's make of this transitional first season under coach White?

Well, 6 losses in 7 games is certainly not good. Especially to lesser teams in the conference such as Vanderbilt and Ole Miss. However, it should not be forgotten that just a season ago, this Bulldogs team was the bottom feeder of the SEC with a comatose offense and a defense that resembled Swiss cheese to combine for a measly 6 total wins. And while Georgia's basketball program is still certainly nowhere where fans would like it to be. Mike White has certainly made impressive improvements to this team in just his first season.

If more than doubling last year's win total and actually competing in most games is not enough for Georgia fan's, here are a few statistics that show that the Bulldogs are on the right track under coach White.

Team Points per-game

2021: 69.8

2022: 69.9

Opponent Points per-game

2021: 78.5

2022: 69.1

Team Scoring Margin

2021: -8.7

2022: 0.8

Field Goal Percentage

2021: .442

2022: .418

Opponent Field Goal Percentage

2021: .474

2022: .425

Double Digit Losses

2021: 16

2022: 5

Double Digit Wins

2021: 2

2022: 7

On top of these statistics, the average attendance for home games has increased by nearly 2,000 people.

While losing 6 games out of the last 7 is certainly not acceptable to Dawg fans (or Mike White) and the Georgia Basketball program almost undoubtedly has an elongated path to its expected success . Fans should recognize that the mess Mike White inherited will take more than just one year to fix. And despite the recent misfortunes, statistics show that the Bulldogs are certainly on the right track, as they are already a much improved team from last season.
