Georgia Tech Loses 12-11 To Auburn In Extra Innings

Georgia Tech loses on the road in 12 innings to Auburn

After winning their weekend series against Notre Dame, Georgia Tech took their act on the road to face an SEC opponent.

The Yellow Jackets took on Auburn tonight, who was 12-3 coming into the game, but the Tigers are on a two-game losing after dropping a pair of games to Southeastern Louisiana.

Georgia Tech was going to be making a pitching change tonight, with Ben King going to take the mound and be the starting pitcher for the Yellow Jackets tonight. King had been good in relief, but this was going to be a tough test against a good Auburn team.

Here is how the Georgia Tech lineup looked tonight:

1. CF- Jake DeLeo

2. IF- Angelo Dispigna

3. 3B- Drew Compton

4. C- Jack Rubenstein

5. RF- Stephen Reid

6. 1B- Jackson Finley

7. DH- Kristian Campbell

8. 2B- Nicholas Romano

9. SS- Nico Senese

A leadoff double from DeLeo got the game started for GT and after a fly out from Dispigna moved him to third, he scored after a Compton ground out and the Yellow Jackets wasted no time getting on the board.

After a quick first inning on the mound from King, the Yellow Jackets offense went back to work and added another run courtesy of an RBI single from Romano. A double play ended Georgia Tech's chances to add more runs, but a 2-0 lead was not a bad start to the game.

Auburn got a leadoff double to start the second, but two quick outs followed. A walk from King gave the Tigers runners on first and second, but the Yellow Jacket pitcher finished the inning strong by getting a strikeout and holding the Auburn offense to zero runs.

DeLeo continued his night with another leadoff hit, this time a double, and then the Yellow Jackets hit several RBI doubles in a row. Compton, Rubenstein, Reid, Finley, and Romano each hit one and it looked like Georgia Tech had complete control in this game and led 7-0 heading to the bottom of the third.

Georgia Tech had a nice start on offense against Auburn

Auburn got a couple of singles to start the bottom of the third and after a ground out advanced both runners to scoring position, Auburn finally got some runs on the board. An RBI single got things started to make it 7-1 and then a two-RBI double made it 7-3. Another RBI single pulled the Tigers within three runs at 7-4 and Danny Hall decided that was enough from King and he put Aeden Finateri on the mound. It was a tough inning from King, but the Yellow Jackets still had the lead. A strikeout would end the inning and Georgia Tech led 7-4 heading to the 4th.

The offense picked up right where it left off. DeLeo and Dispigna both singled and the runners advanced because of a poor throw. A 2-RBI double from Compton pushed the lead to 9-4 and GT was safely back in front. Tech got a couple of more base runners on for Campbell and he came through with an RBI single to push the lead to 10-4 at the end of the inning.

Finateri got through the next inning quickly, but Georgia Tech could not put any runs up in the top of the fifth.

After Auburn got a base runner due to an error, the Tigers responded with a two-run home run and cut the Tech lead to 10-6. A double play and a strikeout sent the game to the sixth, but Auburn did enough damage to make every Georgia Tech fan nervous about a collapse due to pitching.

Compton got the sixth inning started with a leadoff single and then he advanced to second on a passed ball. After a Rubenstein flyout, Reid singled to put runners on the corners with one out for GT. Finley got an RBI to make it 11-6, but one run was all Tech could muster.

Auburn started the bottom of the sixth with a walk and then it all snowballed from there for Georgia Tech. After the Tigers scored two quick runs, Joseph Mannelly came in to pitch for Tech, but he could not stop the immediate bleeding. He gave up an RBI single to make it 11-9 and then loaded the bases. Auburn got two more runs to tie the game and after leading 7-0 early on. the Yellow Jackets had given the lead up and it was a new game from there.

After a quick inning on Georgia Tech's side, Auburn managed to load the bases up against Mannelly courtesy of two singles and a walk, but GT got out of the inning unscathed and we went to the 8th.

After Georgia Tech failed to score in the 8th despite a double from Reid, Terry Busse came in to try and keep the Tiger's offense quiet. He made quick work of Auburn's offense and Georgia Tech had a chance to try and take the lead in the 9th.

After a couple of quick outs, Senese and DeLeo got singles to put runners on base. Dispigna flew out though and Auburn just needed to score one run to win the game.

Busse came back for GT and faced trouble for the first time all season. He gave up two singles to start the inning and the Tigers had a runner-in-scoring position with no outs and a chance to win the game with a base hit. Busse got a quick foul out and then struck out two to end the inning and send the game to extra innings.

Neither offense could heat up, but Cody Carwile came in and gave the Yellow Jackets some big innings and kept them in the game.

At the bottom of the 12th however, the good luck ran out. Carwile gave up a leadoff walk and then a stolen base. A walk-off single from Auburn gave them the win after 12 innings.

This game features over 40 hits and 20 runs and GT used seven total pitchers in this game. The pitching still has a ways to go as far as figuring some things out, but the offense can't go cold as it did at the end of this game.

Georgia Tech will continue ACC play this Friday on the road against No. 8 Louisville. First pitch is at 6:00.
