After clinching the series against Notre Dame in Saturday's earlier game, Georgia Tech could not close out the sweep in today’s doubleheader as they lost 17-4. Pitching issues were exposed in this late game as our offense couldn’t keep the bats hot enough to pull out the win.

Starting Lineup:

1. CF Jake Deleo

2. 1B Angelo Dispigna

3. 3B Drew Compton

4. DH Jack Rubenstein

5. RF Stephen Reid

6. LF Kristian Campbell

7. 2B Nicholas Romano

8. SS Nico Senese

9. C Tyler Minnick

Starting Pitcher: LHP Josiah Siegel

The game kicked off with a rocky start for the Yellow Jackets as a double, single, player hit by pitch, and an RBI walk set up Notre Dame’s Jack Penney to hit a grand slam to put the Fighting Irish up 5-0 in the first inning.

RHP Aeden Finateri entered the game replacing Josiah Siegel to start the second inning, allowing a walk, sacrifice bunt, ground out, and fly out. In the bottom of the second, the Jackets started to gain some traction after Jack Rubenstein was hit by a pitch and Stephen Reid hit a big 2-run home run to center field to make the game 5-2.

The third inning brought offensive action for both teams. In the top of the third, Notre Dame brought the game to 7-3 by way of a solo home run by Carter Putz, their first at-bat, and an RBI double by Jack Penney. RHP Jackson Vaughan replaced Finateri after these runs and closed out the inning with a strikeout and a pop fly. The Jackets followed this by bringing the game to 7-4 after Compton and Rubenstein walked and Reid singled up the middle to allow Compton to score.

This game began to truly look like Notre Dame would run away with it during the fourth inning where Notre Dame scored 2 more runs without any answer from Georgia Tech. Notre Dame started with a single, and soon after, that player stole a base to get into scoring position. A single up the middle after this allowed for a run. After a fielder's choice and another single, a sacrifice bunt gave them another run to bring the score to 9-3. LHP Cody Carwile entered the game for Vaughan with his first batter ending as the sacrifice bunt.

The fifth inning brought no runs for either team, but Tech’s pitcher Carwile was able to close the inning with 3 strikeouts and a walk. Dispigna was able to get a single and steal a base but ended the inning being left on second.

The sixth inning deepened the hole for the Yellow Jackets as they allowed another run off of a single after a double earlier in the inning. The 10-3 deficit was not minimized when the Jackets went on offense after 2 ground outs and a double play quick;y ended the inning.

LHP Noah Samol entered the game for Carwile at the top of the seventh inning. After starting out with a strikeout, the rest of the inning went downhill as Notre Dame ended with 5 runs to bring the game to 15-3. A solo home run to left field started the scoring streak, and a single that led to two stolen bases on wild pitches kept the momentum in favor of Notre Dame. A walk and a player hit by a pitch loaded the bases up. A run was scored after a balk, advancing all the runners, and another run was scored after a wild pitch, the third of the inning. Another player was hit by the pitch, and a double by the following batter led to the fourth run of the inning. LHP Dalton Smith then entered the game for Samol, who allowed an RBI ground out, the fifth score of the inning. Another wild pitch put a player at third, but Smith struck out the last batter. In the bottom of the seventh, a walk and single by Dispigna put two runners on base, but they would be left there as the inning ends.

Angelo Dispigna

Angelo Dispigna went 2-4 in the game

To start the eighth, RHP Demitri Diamont would replace Smith for the inning at the mound, and Brant Baughcum would replace Drew Compton at third base. A single and player hit by a pitch would put runners in scoring position. An RBI single would turn into two runners getting an extra base after a throwing error. Another walk loaded the bases up, and a walk on the following batter pushed a runner to home to make the game 17-3.

In the bottom of the eighth, Tech managed to get a run after Reid hit a single down the right side and subsequently advanced to second on a wild pitch. John Giesler pinch-hit for Campbell and singled to left field, pushing Reid to third. A Nick Romano single to left field earned the RBI to make the game 17-4. There would be no more runs or hits in the game.

After finishing this series, Tech is now 13-3 overall and 2-1 in ACC play.

The Yellow Jackets travel to Auburn, Alabama on Tuesday to take on the Tigers at 7:00 PM ET/6:00 PM CT.
