Georgia Tech Offense Runs Over Georgia Southern In 13-7 Win

Georgia Tech is now 18-11 for the season after the win

Georgia Tech was going to be taking on Georgia Southern tonight for the second time this season and looking to sweep the two-game series against their in-state rival.

The Yellow Jackets were coming off of an embarrassing performance against Boston College, in which they gave up more than 20 runs, including 19 in the seventh and eighth innings. The Yellow Jackets are hoping to get a boost on the mound tonight when Logan McGuire makes his return for GT tonight. McGuire last pitched on February 25th.

Georgia Tech was hoping to get its second win of the year against Georgia Southern

With McGuire on the mound tonight, here is the lineup that Georgia Tech is using tonight:

1. 2B- Kristian Campbell

2. CF- Jake DeLeo

3. RF-Stephen Reid

4. IF- Angleo Dispigna

5. 1B- Jackson Finley

6. DH- John Geisler

7. 3B- Nicholas Romano

8. SS- Jadyn Jackson

9. C- Tyler Minnick

From the start, it looked like things were going to be as high-scoring as they were in Statesboro.

After McGuire got two quick outs, Georgia Southern hit a solo home run to give the Eagles an early 1-0 lead. McGuire struck out the final batter, but it would also be his last batter. He exited after only pitching an inning and Aeden Finateri would come in to relieve him.

The Yellow Jackets struck back quickly though.

A leadoff double from Campbell (who has been red-hot lately) started things off and then DeLeo walked to give GT two baserunners. Reid would ground out, but he advanced both runners. Dispigna grounded out and scored Campbell to give Tech its first run and then DeLeo would take the lead on a wild pitch.

Things did not start off well for Finateri in the top of the second.

After a strikeout, Finateri gave up a single and then the next batter reached on an error. JD Keiser then hit a 3-run home run to give Georgia Southern a 4-2 lead and at that point, things started to look all too familiar from this Tech pitching staff.

GT went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 2nd and then Finateri sat Georgia Southern down 1-2-3 as well.

Georgia Tech got going at the bottom of the third though once the top of the lineup came back around. Campbell hit a solo home run to keep things going for him and cut the lead to 4-3 and then Reid would single after a DeLeo grounded out.

Dispigna would then come up and hit a two-run blast to give the Yellow Jackets the lead.

After a pair of walks, Romano came up to bat with a chance to extend the lead but instead grounded into a double play to end the inning.

Finateri got another 1-2-3 inning in the top of the fourth.

It looked like GT was going to add more runs in the 4th after back-to-back singles from Jackson and Minnick, but Campbell grounded into a double play and then DeLeo popped out to send it to the 5th.

Camron Hill came in to replace Finateri in the 5th and Georgia Tech needed a big game from him. He is talented, but has been struggling lately and needed a good outing to get his confidence back. Hill gave up a single, but that was it and then the Yellow Jackets' offense went back to work in the bottom of the 5th.

Reid grounded out to start things off in the 5th and then Dispigna walked to give Tech a baserunner. Finley then blasted a two-run home run to extend the lead to 7-4.

Giesler walked and then Romano singled to put runners on the corners with just one out. Jackson scored a run with an RBI single to make it 8-4 and then Minnick scored a run on a sac bunt to make it 9-4. Normally, teams would feel safe with a five-run lead, but Georgia Tech's pitching makes that difficult.

After Hill got through another inning, Georgia Tech tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the 6th. DeLeo had a leadoff double and then Reid walked. Dispigna and Finley had back-to-back RBIs to stretch the lead to 11-4 and it felt like it was finally out of reach.

But Georgia Southern would not go down easily though.

Jackson Vaughan came in to pitch for Hill (who had a really good two innings of work) and after striking out the first batter, gave up a solo home run to make it 11-5. Vaughan got another strikeout, but an error allowed the next hitter to reach first. Kaiser then came up and hit his second home run of the game to cut the lead to 11-7 and it stated to have a familiar feeling to it after those three runs in the seventh. Vaughan got out of the inning, but the Yellow Jackets could not do anything in the bottom of the inning and still led 11-7 heading to the 8th.

Vaughan settled in nicely though in the 8th and sat down the Eagles lineup in order.

The final two runs of the game came from a 2-run home run for Finley, who was great behind the plate tonight. That put the game at 13-7.

Parker Brosius replaced Reid in right field and Joseph Mannelly came in to replace Vaughan on the mound. Mannelly struck out the side and Georgia Tech got the win.

Overall, the offense had a fantastic night with 18 hits and 12 RBIs and only struck out three times. It was great seeing Hill get two good innings on the mound as well.

Georgia Tech is now 18-11 for the season and their next game up is a series with North Carolina, who sits above them in the ACC Coastal standings. Game one is Thursday at 6:00 p.m.
