Georgia Tech Basketball vs Florida State: Preview And Prediction

Can Georgia Tech advance to the second round of the ACC Tournament?

It is time for Georgia Tech to survive and advance.

The ACC Tournament is beginning tomorrow and Georgia Tech is riding the second-longest winning streak in the ACC, winning their last three games (Duke is on a six-game winning streak). The Yellow Jackets have been playing well over the last month of the season after suffering a nine-game losing streak. Head coach Josh Pastner has found a starting lineup that has been solid and guys like Miles Kelly (recently named the ACC player of the week), Lance Terry, and Ja'von Franklin have been carrying this team through this stretch.

Now, the Yellow Jackets face Florida State with a chance to advance to the second round of the ACC Tournament against Pitt on Wednesday. Lose this game and the season will be over and the focus will turn fully to whether or not Athletic Director J Batt decides to bring back Pastner or go in another direction.

These two teams have played once this season, with Florida State winning by 11 in Tallahassee in January. Both teams are different and Tech enters this game with more momentum. Florida State has lost six of its last seven, with the only win being a miraculous buzzer-beater against Miami.

Can Georgia Tech defeat Florida State in the first round of the ACC Tournament?

Georgia Tech and Florida State are battling in the ACC Tournament for the fourth time. The Seminoles have won two of the three prior meetings (by a total of three points), but the Yellow Jackets’ victory came in the championship game of the 2021 tournament by an 80-75 score in Greensboro (Per Georgia Tech PR).

Tech is 4-12 all-time in Tuesday opening round games at the ACC Tournament and has lost its last four dating back to an 88-85 overtime victory against Clemson in 2016 (Per Georgia Tech PR).

At the moment, Tech’s offensive efficiency rating as measured by KenPom.com is 104.3, the highest for the Jackets in seven seasons under Josh Pastner. Tech’s season turnover rate of 10.8 per game is its lowest on record dating back to the 1992-93 season when turnovers became an official NCAA statistic. The Jackets have turned it over just 9.5 times per game in its last eight ACC games (Per Georgia Tech PR).

Georgia Tech is currently 164th in the KenPom ratings, while Florida State is 212th.

Georgia Tech is hoping to advance past Florida State in the ACC Tournament

Nothing is guaranteed in college basketball. However, I do have a sense of confidence that the Yellow Jackets can take down the Seminoles based on how both teams are playing. Florida State has not been consistent at any point this season and Georgia Tech is playing with a ton of confidence heading into the Tournament. Whether they can win multiple games is a big question. But against this Florida State team? Give me the Yellow Jackets.

Score: Georgia Tech 77, Florida State 71
