Georgia Tech vs Northern Illinois: First-Half Thoughts

What are the biggest takeaways from the first half of Georgia Tech vs NIU?

Georgia Tech could not have played much better in that first half against Northern Illinois. The defense was fantastic and the three-point shooting was solid. This looked like a mismatch early on and it certainly has turned into that.

The Yellow Jackets are well on their way to winning in a blowout if they can keep playing like this. The lead at the half is 43-20, but Georgia Tech has led by as much as 26 points in this game.

So what are the biggest takeaways from the first half of the action?

1. The Defense Was ELITE

Georgia Tech head coach Josh Pastner

Georgia Tech has been a great defensive team so far this season.

Georgia Tech came into the game as one of the best teams in the country at defending the three-point shot and they showed why in this game.

In the first half, the Yellow Jackets held Northern Illinois to 20.0% shooting from the field and 15.4% from three-point range. The transition defense has been good and Georgia Tech is winning with defensive rebounds.

This is another showing of great defense by the Yellow Jackets and it is good to see that it's carrying over from game to game so far, even if they have not faced many great teams.

2. The Three-Point Shooting Showed Signs of Improvement

Georgia Tech might have only shot 33.3% from three in the first half, but they had it going at different times in the first half.

Deebo Coleman shot 2-3 from three in the first half, Sturdivant was 1-1, and Kelly was 1-5. This team has guys that are capable of being good shooters and there were glimpses of that in the first half.

3. Tech Committed Too Many Fouls But Were Bailed Out By Poor Free Throw Shooting From NIU

Georgia Tech committed 10 fouls to NIU's five in the first half and they were lucky that the Huskies were not a good free-throw shooting team. NIU shot 4-11 from the free-throw line in the 1st half and while this game is in Georgia Tech's control, they can't commit this many fouls against a better team. I might be nitpicking, but this is the one thing that the Yellow Jackets had as a negative in the first half
