Georgia Tech's Tonie Morgan Named ACC Rookie Of The Week

This is the second time that Morgan has been named rookie of the week

Georgia Tech's Tonie Morgan has been one of the top rookies in the ACC this season and for the second time, she is being awarded ACC rookie of the week. The Yellow Jackets just completed a big upset against No. 15 NC State and Morgan was a big reason why.

This team has started to play up to its potential in the last couple of weeks and while Morgan is not alone in that effort, these last two performances from her have been pivotal this season.

Morgan nearly averaged a double-double last week, pitching in 13.5 points and 8.0 assists per game between Tech’s two games. In Tech’s win over nationally ranked NC State, Morgan collected her fourth double-double of the season, and second consecutive, with 17 points and 10 assists. Morgan matched her career-high in scoring against the Wolfpack, connecting on five field goals and 7-of-10 from the free throw line.

She followed that game with a 10-point performance at Miami on Sunday to get her streak of scoring in double-figures to six-straight games. On the season, Morgan owns 13 games scoring in double-figures. She is third on the team in scoring, averaging 9.9 points per game, and leads Georgia Tech in assists with 82 on the year.

Morgan is one of only four freshmen in the ACC to own a double-double on the year, and one of only three to own multiple. Additionally, the Tallahassee, Fla., native is one of only four players overall in the conference to own a double-double on points and assists.

The freshman Yellow Jacket earned her first Rookie of the Week nod on Jan. 23. This week, Miami’s Jasmyne Roberts was named ACC Player of the Week. The awards are voted on by the league’s Blue Ribbon Panel.

The Yellow Jackets return to the hardwood on Thursday, Feb. 9 at Clemson. Tip-off for the game is slated for 8 p.m. on RSN in Littlejohn Coliseum. Georgia Tech defeated the Tigers 85-74 earlier this season.
