Most Glaring Concern Georgia Tech Still Hasn’t Solved (And How It Can)

While we have been talking about this concern for Georgia Tech all offseason and there's been improvement, wide receiver remains a concern, especially given the inexperience at the position outside the top three players. Even there, Dalen Penson hasn’t played wide receiver since high school at Sandy Creek. He has given the Yellow Jackets a reason to be optimistic, but still concerned about whether he will be ready against Colorado.

Isaiah Fuhrmann comes over from the FCS level and has had a productive fall camp and career thus far. Fuhrmann is stepping up to a higher level of competition, playing in the ACC with really good cornerbacks all over the field. It could be a few games before he finds his groove.

Jordan Allen is the one wide receiver you don’t have to doubt about who will start. He played some as a true freshman and got better as the season went on. With a year under his belt and working on his craft, Allen could be a primary go-to weapon on offense and a player they lean on in the passing attack.

Answering Doubt

Inexperience raises some eyebrows in this room; outside of the three receivers we mentioned, which young guys will be ready to go and contribute? While there are growing pains anywhere, it still has to make you feel uneasy if you are a Georgia Tech fan.

"I think it's been positive. Obviously, when you're lining up with a whole new group, there's going to be some growing pains. But in terms of execution, we're still working to get where we want to be. But the effort's there, attitude's there. And those guys are all starting to come together and take ownership in what we put on the field,” said Georgia Tech WR Coach Jafar Williams.

The best way to stop doubt and to get people to not feel as concerned about the team is to come out of the gates and make plays. This wide receiver room can’t struggle with drops, wrong routes run, or miscommunications with Alberto Mendoza.

That could be problematic, but there could be a solution. I think the one area that gives you optimism is having a former NFL wide receiver in the locker room working with the receivers. DeAndre Hopkins at the height of his career was one of the best in the NFL. He brings that experience to a locker room that needs it and can take tips from a veteran. That one move alone could solve the inexperience and some of the early struggles for this group

"Yeah, the first thing I would say is intelligent, man. And it's a pleasure to have that guy in the room. From the first day that we got on the phone and we talked, you know, I think the biggest thing between both of us is making sure we're relaying the same message. And he has so many tricks and tools that are going to benefit our room. And it's just a pleasure working with the guy, man. He has the right demeanor when he approaches guys. He's very calculated on what he teaches. But, man, that guy is awesome. You know, I think it really, really elevated our room in terms of having, you know, all hands on deck and multiple guys being able to coach,” said Williams.

We will find out early if we need to be concerned with the WR room or if they will put us at ease.
