How will Gonzaga try to slow down Purdue’s Zach Edey?: ‘You got to take away the supporting staff’

“You kind of have to live with what Edey gives you,” said Adam Morrison on The Perimeter. “You just hope he doesn’t score 40.”

The Gonzaga Bulldogs face a tall task Friday when they face 7-foot-4 All-American Zach Edey and the Purdue Boilermakers in the Sweet 16 round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament.

The Zags (27-7, 14-2 WCC) weren’t been able to slow down the eventual two-time National Player of the Year in both head-to-head matchups over the last two seasons. Edey went for 23 points, seven rebounds and three blocks in Purdue’s 84-66 win at the PK85 in 2022. A year later, he dropped 25 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks in a 73-63 triumph at the Maui Invitational in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Gonzaga is in the majority of teams who haven’t been able to solve Edey over the past two seasons. He’s put up 24.5 points, 12.1 rebounds and blocked 2.3 shots per game as a unanimous All-American choice. His numbers through two NCAA Tournament games are even more ridiculous — 26.5 points, 17.5 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game while shooting 67.9% from the floor.

Again, stopping Edey is easier said than done. At the same time, limiting how much help he gets from his teammates is key as well.

Former Gonzaga All-American Adam Morrison discussed the importance of taking away Edey’s supporting cast, winning the rebounding battle and much more in his keys to victory against the Boilermakers on a new episode of The Perimeter.
