Oklahoma State Transfer Javon Small Hears From Indiana

After averaging 15.1 points per game at Oklahoma State in 2023-24, guard Javon Small entered the transfer portal and has heard from Indiana.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana has reportedly reached out to Oklahoma State transfer Javon Small, and coach Mike Woodson will have to recruit against plenty of high-major programs.

Since entering the transfer portal on Monday, Small has heard from Texas, Kansas, Louisville, Michigan, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Kansas State, Mississippi State, Texas Tech, Indiana, LSU, Georgia, Villanova, Xavier, Arizona State, Villanova, Cincinnati, TCU, Texas A&M, Georgetown, Miami and Baylor, according to On3's Jamie Shaw.

Small is a 6-foot-3, 195-pound guard with one year of eligibility. He's ranked No. 9 among all players in the transfer portal and No. 1 among point guards, according to 247 Sports.

As a junior in 2023-24 at Oklahoma State, Small averaged 15.1 points, 4.7 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.0 steals in 33 minutes per game. He started 31 games for the 12-20 Cowboys, who fired coach Mike Boynton after his seventh season. Small shot 44.1% from the field, 37.4% from 3-point range on 5.3 attempts per game and 86.6% at the free throw line. He received an All-Big 12 honorable mention.

Small began his career with two seasons at East Carolina before transferring to Oklahoma State. He played just 9.2 minutes per game in 16 appearances as a freshman in 2021-22, then had a breakout sophomore campaign in 2022-23.

Small was averaging 15.8 points, 5.6 assists and 4.8 rebounds across 18 games before suffering a season-ending leg injury. Playing 34.7 minutes per game, Small shot 39.7% from the field, 33.3% from 3-point range on six attempts per game and 85.4% from the free throw line.

Transferring to Indiana would be a homecoming of sorts for Small, who's hometown is South Bend, Ind. He spent his freshman year at Riley High School in South Bend, then transferred to Franklin Central High School in Indianapolis for his sophomore and junior years. He played for Team Indiana in the 2021 Prep Ball Stars Midwest Challenge alongside fellow high-major college basketball players like Luke Goode (Illinois), Brooks Barnhizer (Northwestern), Blake Wesley (Notre Dame) and DJ Hughes (Butler).

Small ultimately graduated from Arizona Compass Prep in Chandler, Ariz. and committed to East Carolina as a three-star recruit in the class of 2021.

Indiana has six scholarships to fill heading into the 2024-25 season. And after losing senior point guard Xavier Johnson to graduation and backup guard CJ Gunn to the transfer portal, adding a guard like Small would fill an area of need.
