Report: Former Indiana Basketball Coach Mike Davis Out at Detroit Mercy After 6 Seasons

Mike Davis, who was the basketball coach at Indiana from 2000-06, is out at Detroit Mercy. The two sides parted ways after the Titans posted a 1-31 record in the 2023-24 season. Davis just completed his sixth year with the program.

Detroit Mercy has decided to part ways with basketball coach Mike Davis, according to a report from Jeff Goodman of Field of 68. The Titans finished the 2023-24 college basketball season with a 1-31 record.

Davis just completed his sixth season (2018-24) at Detroit Mercy. The Titans were 60-119 in that stretch with a 44-65 record in Horizon League play.

Indiana fans are familiar with Davis, who was the coach of the program from 2000-06. He was awarded the job in Bloomington after the university terminated Bob Knight in September 2000 for violating a "zero tolerance" policy.

The Hoosiers posted a 21-13 record in Davis' first season at the helm. They then followed that up with a 25-12 campaign in 2001-02, winning a Big Ten regular season title and reaching the national championship. 

Before being named Knight's replacement, Davis had been on the legendary coach's staff at Indiana since 1997. Prior to his time in Bloomington, he had been an assistant at Alabama (1995-97).

Davis is the last coach to lead Indiana to a Final Four.

Davis has had stops at Indiana (2000-06), UAB (2006-12), Texas Southern (2012-18) and Detroit Mercy (2018-24) — all as a head coach. He owns an overall record of 412-360 and has led his teams to nine NCAA Tournament appearances and five trips to the NIT.

Over the course of his career, Davis has led his teams to six regular season conference championships — one at Indiana, one at UAB and four at Texas Southern. He also won four conference tournament titles at Texas Southern.

Davis was the C-USA Coach of the Year in 2011 and the SWAC Coach of the Year three times (2013, 2015, 2016).
