Big Ten Roundup (Sept. 16): Maryland Beats Virginia 42-14, Juwan Howard Undergoes Heart Surgery

Coach Mike Locksley and the Maryland Terrapins defeated coach Tony Elliott and the Virginia Cavaliers 42-14 at SECU Stadium in College Park on Friday night, while Michigan basketball coach Juwan Howard underwent a successful heart surgery.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — For the second straight week, Maryland started a game down 14-0. And for the second straight week, the Terrapins immediately rattled off a myriad of touchdowns to storm back and win by multiple scores.

Coach Mike Locksley and his team advanced to a 3-0 record on Friday night, as Maryland defeated old ACC adversary Virginia 42-14 at College Park.

In much more serious news, Michigan basketball coach Juwan Howard underwent successful heart surgery on Friday, the team announced in a release. Howard is expected to need six to 12 weeks for a full recovery, and associate head coach Phil Martelli will serve as the interim leader for the Wolverines during that time.

Here's everything you need to know in today's Big Ten Roundup:

Maryland 42, Virginia 14

Ten minutes into Friday night's action, coach Tony Elliott and the Cavaliers could not have been doing better. Maryland had punted and missed a field goal on its first two possessions, while Virginia was led on back-to-back touchdown drives by true freshman quarterback Anthony Colandrea.

But the Terrapins slowly worked their way back into the game, finally taking a 21-14 lead in the third and running away with the contest in the fourth when Colandrea threw not one, not two, but three back-breaking interceptions.

Maryland is far from a perfect team, but it was hard to imagine they could be kept under control all night by a shaky UVA defense while having Taulia Tagovailoa under center.

Tagovailoa finished the game completing 19-of-30 passes for 342 yards and a touchdown. As has often been the case, Maryland has made it through non-conference play undefeated, and should be favored in its next two games against both Michigan State and Indiana.

A perfect 5-0 record through September is possible, if not likely, though the difficulty will immediately scale up from there, as Locksley's Terrapins will take on Ohio State on Oct. 7 in Columbus.

Juwan Howard's Heart Surgery

According to the press release from the Michigan basketball team, Howard underwent heart surgery on Thursday, which successfully resected an aortic aneurysm and repaired Howard's aortic valve.

Howard is entering his fifth season as the basketball head coach in Ann Arbor, but now could miss the opening week of the 2023-24 regular season. The release said that Howard needs six to 12 weeks for his full recovery, but that he could return to the team within four to six weeks. Michigan's basketball season begins on Nov. 3 at home against Northwood.

The former St. Joe's head coach Martelli will serve as the interim coach in place of Howard for the time being.
