LIVE BLOG: Follow Indiana Football vs. Indiana State Week 2 Action

Indiana continues the 2023 season with an in-state contest against the Indiana State Sycamores at 7 p.m. ET at Memorial Stadium. Follow all the action with our live blog, written by HoosiersNow.com reporter Jack Ankony live from the Memorial Stadium press box.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Memorial Stadium is home to an in-state Friday night matchup between the Indiana Hoosiers and Indiana State Sycamores.

Coach Tom Allen's team is coming off a 23-3 loss to Ohio State last week, and coach Curt Mallory's squad suffered a 27-0 home loss to Eastern Illinois.

We're in the press box at Memorial Stadium to provide live updates throughout the game.

10:17 p.m. – FINAL: INDIANA 41, INDIANA STATE 7. The Hoosiers racked up 558 total yards, compared to just 98 for the Sycamores.

10:09 p.m. – Sorsby is unable to convert multiple pass attempts to the end zone, so Indian settles for a field goal. True freshman Nico Radicic hits the 21-yard attempt. INDIANA 41, INDIANA STATE 7

9:52 p.m. – Brendan Sorsby back in the game at quarterback, probably for the rest of the contest. Jackson completed 18-of-21 passes for 236 yards and rushed six times for nine yards and a touchdown.

9:44 p.m. – Jackson remains in at quarterback, and he brings the Hoosiers into the red zone after a 20-yard completion to Josh Henderson. A few plays later, Henderson plows ahead for a 3-yard touchdown run to cap off a 7-play, 45-yard touchdown drive. INDIANA 38, INDIANA STATE 7

9:35 p.m. – Marcus Burris Jr., a transfer from Texas A&M, comes through with another sack for a one-yard loss. Indiana leads Indiana State 31-7 after three quarters of play. Indiana State will start the fourth quarter with a punt. Indiana has a 444-92 advantage in total yards.

9:33 p.m. – Andre Carter sacks Olaes for a five-yard loss, his second tackle for loss today. It's been a dominant night for the Indiana defensive line.

9:29 p.m. – Christian Turner pushes ahead for a one-yard touchdown run to cap off a 13-play, 93-yard drive that consumed over six minutes. INDIANA 31, INDIANA STATE 7

9:28 p.m. – Jackson makes a nice throw to Omar Cooper Jr. over the middle for a 25-yard gain. Cooper, a redshirt freshman, is up to 63 yards on the day. He was a four-star recruit out of Lawrence North High School.

9:23 p.m. – On 3rd and 1, Josh Henderson was immediately hit at the line of scrimmage, but he powered ahead for the first down to keep Indiana's drive alive. Jaylin Lucas burst ahead for a 14-yard gain on the next play. Indiana State has had a tough time containing Lucas today.

9:13 p.m. – Lanell Carr and Philip Blidi join forces to sack Olaes, bringing up 3rd and 15. Olaes tried to scramble on 3rd down, but Aaron Casey bottled him up for a short gain, forcing an Indiana State punt. Indiana's defensive line is starting to bring consistent pressure on the quarterback.

9:06 p.m. – On 3rd and 1, Olaes bobbled the snap but was able to pick up the first down with a run up the middle.

9:04 p.m. – Jaylin Lucas brings the second half kickoff out to the Indiana 27-yard line. Sorsby remains in at quarterback. Zach Carpenter was flagged for his second illegal man downfield penalty of the night, and Indiana is forced to punt three plays later.

8:38 p.m. – At halftime, Indiana leads 24-7. The Hoosiers generated 340 total yards of offense, compared to 84 for the Sycamores. The 75-yard fumble return is somewhat keeping Indiana State in the game, but it hasn't ever felt too competitive. Indiana is controlling the line of scrimmage on both sides.

8:33 p.m. – On 3rd and 7 from the 10-yard line, Sorsby overthrew Omar Cooper Jr. in the end zone, bringing up fourth down. Chris Freeman trots out for a 28-yard field goal attempt and drills it. That's a 10-play, 42-yard drive with Sorsby in at quarterback. INDIANA 24, INDIANA STATE 7

8:28 p.m. – Brendan Sorsby makes an accurate throw to DeQuece Carter to convert 3rd and 10 and keep Indiana's drive alive. He hit Donaven McCulley for another 10-yard gain on the next play, a long throw to the far sideline that was a bit risky but placed well.

8:21 p.m. – Jaylin Lucas fumbled the ball near the line of scrimmage, and it's scooped up for a 75-yard touchdown by Maddix Blackwell, who attended Bloomington South High School. That's nearly a 14-point swing, as Indiana was approaching the red zone, but instead it's a Sycamore score. INDIANA 21, INDIANA STATE 7

8:17 p.m. – Josh Henderson picks up 20 yards up the middle, bringing his rushing total to 35 yards on four carries. Indiana has a major physical advantage on both lines today.

8:14 p.m. – Brendan Sorsby is back in at quarterback for Indiana. Expected to see him at some point.

8:13 p.m. – Olaes hurled the ball into heavy coverage near the goal line, and it was intercepted by Indiana cornerback Nic Toomer, who joined the team this year as a transfer from Stanford. Pretty bad throw from Olaes, but credit Toomer for capitalizing.

8:11 p.m. – A strong tackle from Andre Carter forces 3rd and 8 for Indiana State in the red zone. Feels like the Sycamores need a touchdown here to have any chance to keeping this one competitive. On 3rd down, Indiana State is flagged for holding, but Indiana declined it, bringing up 4th and 8. The Sycamores lined up to go for it, then called a timeout.

8:03 p.m. – Tom Allen calls a timeout as his defense is looking a bit vulnerable on this drive. Indiana State has reached the Hoosiers' 26-yard line after an 8-yard rush from Korbin Allen.

8:00 p.m. – Olaes scampers through the IU defense for an 11-yard rush. On 3rd and 5, ISU receiver Harry Van Dyne high-pointed the ball for a 15-yard gain, bringing the Sycamores across midfield.

7:55 p.m. – Penalties kill Indiana's drive, forcing the Hoosiers' first punt of the game.

7:52 p.m. – Josh Henderson would have had an 11-yard gain, but it's called back for holding on Mike Katic. That's the Hoosiers' second penalty in a row after Cam Camper was flagged for false start. Indiana faces 2nd and 23 now.

7:49 p.m. – Indiana leads 21-0 after one quarter of play. The Hoosiers will begin the second quarter on their own 44-yard line.

7:47 p.m. – Indiana's defense gets off the field quickly again, as Jacob Mangum-Farrar brought the heat on third down to force an incompletion. Jaylin Lucas muffed the ensuing punt, but it was recovered by Camden Jordan.

7:38 p.m. – Jackson kept the ball on a read-option play and was immediately hit for a 5-yard loss, bringing up 3rd and Goal from the 10-yard line. Indiana called a quarterback draw, and Jackson dove ahead for a touchdown, the first of his Indiana career. This game is quickly getting out of hand. INDIANA 21, INDIANA STATE 0

7:35 p.m. – After a nice completion from Jackson to Williams for a 10-yard gain, Henderson converts 3rd and 2 with a powerful run up the middle. Cam Camper made an impressive diving catch for a 21-yard gain on the following play.

7:32 p.m. – Great throw from Tayven Jackson down the right sideline, complete to Cam Camper, who ran all the way to the one-yard line. However, it's called back for an illegal man downfield penalty on center Zach Carpenter, negating the big gain. Still, that's a throw that will work in Jackson's favor regarding the quarterback competition.

7:30 p.m. – On 3rd and 4, Indiana State ran to the right side, but Tee Hodge ran into his lead blocker and was tackled by Phillip Dunnam for a one-yard gain. That's another three-and-out for the Sycamores. Indiana defense looking stout so far.

7:24 p.m. – Jackson is back in after missing one play. He rushed for a 3-yard gain on his first play, then Jaylin Lucas rushed for his second 25-yard touchdown of the game. INDIANA 14, INDIANA STATE 0

7:21 p.m. – Brendan Sorsby now in at quarterback as Jackson is being evaluated by medical staff. His first play results in a 31-yard completion to Omar Cooper Jr.

7:18 p.m. – Indiana is having a ton of success with quick passes to the outside near the line of scrimmage. Another easy completion from Jackson leads to a 22-yard gain for Josh Henderson. Jackson overthrew an open E.J. Williams on the following play and got hit hard. Jackson is down and being looked at by medical staff. Brendan Sorsby warming up.

7:13 p.m. – Olaes missed a wide open receiver for what could have been a big gain for Indiana State on first down. Lanell Carr rushed hard off the edge on 2nd down, resulting in no gain for Indiana State. Olaes felt the pressure again on 3rd down, leading to another incompletion. That's a quick three and out for the Sycamores. Indiana's defense clearly has a physical edge early on.

7:08 p.m. – Another easy completion for Jackson, this time a screen to Donaven McCulley, who broke free for a 19-yard gain. On the next play, Jaylin Lucas ran off the right tackle and sprinted past the Sycamore defense for a 25-yard touchdown run. Everything went right for the Hoosiers in their opening drive. INDIANA 7, INDIANA STATE 0

7:07 p.m. – Tayven Jackson completes an easy screen pass to Jaylin Lucas for a 10-yard gain. Indiana picks up an additional 15 yards on a roughing the passer penalty, bringing the ball close to midfield.

7:05 p.m. – Solid coverage and tackling from Indiana on the first two plays to force a 3rd and 6. Jacob Mangum-Farrar nearly had a sack on 3rd down, but Olaes escaped, only to still lose six yards after being pushed out of bounds. Nice start for the defense. Tayven Jackson and the Indiana offense will start its first drive at the 27-yard line.

6:58 p.m. – Indiana won the coin toss and deferred, so Indiana State will receive the opening kickoff. Here we go.

6:15 p.m. – Tayven Jackson will start at quarterback tonight, but Allen said fellow redshirt freshman Brendan Sorsby will also play. Indiana hopes to make a starting quarterback decision before next week's matchup against Louisville at Lucas Oil Stadium. Allen has also said quarterback Dexter Williams II could return around midseason.

6:00 p.m. – According to Indiana's pregame availability report, a new obligation for all Big Ten teams, the Hoosiers will be without quarterback Dexter Williams II and cornerback Jamier Johnson in Week 2 against Indiana State, while cornerback Kobee Minor, safety Bryson Bonds, tight end Trey Walker and offensive lineman Max Longman are listed as questionable.
