Fiston Carlson showed excellent potential as a freshman last fall. College football programs noticed.

The Class of 2027 prospect from Roland-Story (IA) High was invited to spring practice at Iowa. He took the Hawkeyes up on it Saturday.

"The part I liked the most I would say would be meeting and talking to the coaches," he told HN.

The 5-foot-10, 200-pounder showed big-play ability at running back. He carried the ball 28 times for 310 yards (11.1 YPC) and five touchdowns. On defense, he delivered 21 solo tackles, 4.0 stops for loss and 3.0 sacks.

Iowa assistant Jay Niemann, the program's lead in-state recruiter, provided Carlson with positive feedback.

"(He) said that I have good work ethic and that by the time I’m done with high school I could turn out to be good if I continue working hard since I have 3 more years," Carlson said.

A strong all-around athlete, Carlson has his track team's fastest time in the 100 meters (11.72 seconds) and the third best mark in the 200 (24.60) this season. He played basketball during the winter.

The Hawkeyes seek out multi-sport athletes in the recruiting process. Carlson expects to return to Iowa City in the not-too-distant future.

"I’ll likely to be back this summer for a camp," he said.

Upper Iowa and Grand View have shown interest in Carlson, he said. He's been invited to camp at Grand View after doing so last year.

Prep Redzone Iowa recently released its first rankings for the 2027 Class, and Carlson is in there. The scouting service liked his performance on both sides of the ball during his ninth-grade campaign. Carlson shows impressive burst when running with the football during his freshman highlights
