Zach Lutmer, Cornerback

Zach Lutmer is likely to be the heart and soul of Iowa's defense this year. His versatility is unlike anyone else on Iowa and very rare across the college football landscape.

Lutmer can play man coverage, drop back in zone with his instincts, or come up and make a tackle in the run game. The 2026 season has the opportunity to be Zach Lutmer's breakout year, putting him on the national college football map.

Jayden Montgomery, Linebacker

Linebacker has been a staple in Iowa's defense during the 2020s, with Jack Campbell, Jay Higgins, and Karson Sharar all leading the defense and making their way to the NFL.

Next in line is Jayden Montgomery, who figures to start alongside Cam Buffington in the middle of Iowa's defense. If things go as they are supposed to, Montgomery could be in for 100 tackles this season.
