Trevor Lauck Looking to Help Hawkeyes

Incoming Iowa Freshman O-Lineman Willing to Do Whatever It Takes

You can see the anticipation in Trevor Lauck's eyes. His college experience is quickly approaching. It's hitting him. 

The Indianapolis Roncalli offensive lineman moves into the University of Iowa this weekend, leaving behind family and friends. He's realizing a dream he's worked very hard to achieve. 

"Right now, I'm just excited to move in and show everyone what I got," he told HN this week.

Lauck (6-6, 290) arrives in Iowa City without pressure to play right away. He's giving it his best shot to see the field in 2023 knowing he must beat out veteran college guys to do so. 

"I'm just going to see what happens. I know that we're going to have an experienced offensive line this year. I don't expect to play Year One. But I feel like if I can help the team, I want to help the team. I want to come in and do whatever I can to get better," he said. 

Iowa beat out stiff competition for Lauck's commitment. He reported scholarship offers from Michigan, Ohio State, Michigan State, Tennessee, Louisville, Kentucky, Indiana, Purdue, Illinois and others. 

The Spartans and Hawkeyes played host to him on official visits. 

"I would say it was pretty close with those two. What separated Iowa, there were a lot of things - The O-Line tradition, the consistency of the program, coach (Kirk) Ferentz, coach (George) Barnett, the guys I got to be around in my recruiting class. I connected well with them," he said. 

A three-sport athlete at Roncalli, Lauck averaged more than eight points a game in basketball as a senior. Last week, he finished third at the Indiana state track meet in the shot put. He broke the school record in the event this season. 

"It's helped me stay in shape. It's helped my footwork," he said about other sports aiding him in football. "Plus I'm constantly competing against others, which helps a lot." 

The multi-sport athleticism translates on the gridiron for Lauck. You can see during his senior highlights a big guy who moves well, is strong up top and drives through defenders with his legs. The clips of him playing defensive line also feature explosiveness and quickness. 

Roncalli leans on its run game a lot, giving Lauck confidence in that aspect of offensive line play. He feels good about his pass protection, but that's the area he'll focus on most when he gets to Iowa. 

Lauck lined up at left tackle as a senior but believes he's versatile enough to play other spots along the front. 

"I feel like I can become a great player for the program. I'm looking forward to making an impact as soon as I can. I'll do whatever I can for the team. I'll play tackle, guard, center, D-Line, it doesn't matter," he said. 

This season Lauck will room with fellow Indianapolis-area offensive lineman and incoming freshman Leighton Jones, who prepped at nearby Brownsburg (IN) High. 

"We've known of each other since probably the eighth grade," Lauck said. "As the recruiting process started, we got closer. He committed first. After that, he was always in my ear about committing and wanting us to be teammates." 

Lauck will start out as a Business major but could end up going in a different direction. 

"I have an interest in it and took some classes for it in high school. I feel like I was naturally good at it. I just want to continue seeing if I really do like it," he said. 

Lauck comes from athletic bloodlines. His father, David Lauck, played college baseball and his grandfather, Chick Lauck, played for the 1966 national champion Notre Dame football team. 

David Lauck won a state football championship at Roncalli in 1993. Trevor won one in 2000 and lost just four games during his high school. 

He expects that success to continue with Iowa. 

"I'm just looking forward to winning games," Trevor said. "I want to win a Big Ten Championship and do everything I can while I'm there for however long."
