LIVE: Updates and Scores from Kansas vs Arkansas in the Liberty Bowl

In this story:
The Kansas Jayhawks are in Memphis to take on the Arkansas Razorbacks in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl, and fans are understandably excited for the first postseason football for their team since 2008.
I'll be giving updates live from the stadium throughout the game here, so make sure you check back frequently. You can also follow live updates on the Rock Chalk Podcast and Blue Wings Rising Twitter accounts, and join the conversation in our Discord server.
8:52pm: That will do it. Kansas loses as Jason Bean passes on the run and is way off target. The comeback falls short.
8:44pm: What a wild sequence. Kansas gets penalized, converts it anyway, and then Jalon Daniels scores the touchdown. He is short on the two point try, but Arkansas gets called for targeting, so Kansas gets another shot.
JARED CASEY AGAIN!!!
— Rock Chalk Podcast (@RockChalkPod) December 29, 2022
2-point conversion is good and we are in the third overtime!
8:33pm: Arkansas scores first in the second overtime, and they convert the 2-point try. Kansas needs to score here to get it to 2-point tries.
8:25pm: Questionable playcalling for Kansas is made moot by a great play by Jalon Daniels to get the touchdown on a throw to Jared Casey. But Arkansas answers and we head to overtime number 2.
8:15pm: I think that I can honestly say this is the most crazy end of a game I've seen.
Lol @espn gave KJ Jefferson Player of the Game with like 5 minutes to go and now Jalon Daniels has 495 passing yards with 4 TDs in a tie game. #LibertyBowl #kufball

8:12pm: This:
I have never been so happy to have to scrap a recap that was 80% of the way done....#kufball
— Andy Mitts (@AndyMitts12) December 29, 2022
8:10pm: KANSAS TIES IT UP!!!
KANSAS TIES IT ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?!
— Dean Straka (@DWStraka49) December 29, 2022
8:07pm: I'm stunned....
WE GOT IT WE GOT IT ONSIDE RECOVERY
— Kansas Football (@KU_Football) December 29, 2022
7:59pm: The fumble gave Kansas hope, but a sack there means that Kansas is REALLY short on time now. It's still basically over, but it's not technically over yet.
7:54pm: That first down makes it all but official. Arkansas has the ball 2nd and 11 at the Kansas 30 with 3 minutes to go. The Jayhawks have no more timeouts. The score is 15.
Daniels missed too many throws. KU got bullied up front on both sides. So many missed tackles.
— Nick Schwerdt (@nick_schwerdt) December 29, 2022
This one isn't tough to break down.
7:46pm: The fourth down pass falls incomplete. It's going to be hard for Kansas fans to feel like their team should have won this one.
Disappointing 1H man. 2 bad picks and a terrible ST fumble are the difference
— Bryson Stricker (@BryBryStrick) December 29, 2022
This game is so painful Kansas has had every opportunity and they’ve fallen just short.
— JAKE ELLENBOGEN (@JKBOGEN) December 29, 2022
7:43pm: Arnold with an amazing catch!
Lawrence Arnold has some hands, my god. Big play here late to place Kansas closer to another much-needed score. #kufball
— Conner Becker (@ctbecker) December 29, 2022
7:41pm:
Use your best offensive player as a decoy on 3rd & 2?
— Mark Mangino (@KeepSawinWood) December 29, 2022
Yikes!
7:36pm: Kansas gets off the field. As we've seen, this is a defense that plays much better in the second half, and they have made a ton of adjustments to give the Jayhawks a chance here.
7:33pm: The Kansas defense is fired up and not ready to concede this one yet, so there's at least that.
Craig Young is fired up on the #KUfball sideline. He's been visibly frustrated since KU didn't convert on third down. During the timeout he went over to the offensive side of the sideline and clearly said some things to the unit. He's now back with the defense.
— Michael Swain (@MSwain247) December 29, 2022
7:31pm: Kansas missed a huge opportunity there with that three and out. With how many missed opportunities they had tonight, it could be tough to stomach this if it stays this close.
I’m going to be annoyed by that pooch the rest of the night.
— Jayhawk Talk (@JayhawkTalk) December 29, 2022
7:25pm: Big stop for Kansas after a penalty on a broken play makes it 3rd and 17. Kansas has the ball with an opportunity.
7:15pm: Kansas settles for a field goal. But they are back within two scores. Can they do enough?
7:11pm: It's Locklin's turn to be the hero on a drive. He has two big catches so far this drive and Kansas is threatening heading into the 4th.
7:08pm: Tide is starting to turn a bit for Kansas. Big touchdown followed by a huge three-and-out. Kansas gets the ball back.
3-and-out for the #KUfball D. D-Line stuffed the run & Cobee Bryant with a pass break-up on the third-down throw. Just a weeee bit of momentum starting to creep onto the KU sideline. Still such a huge hill to climb, though. 38-20, Arkansas with 1:54 to play in the 3rd Quarter.
— Matt Tait (@mctait) December 29, 2022
7:02pm: Quick drive for Kansas ends in a touchdown for Ky Thomas!
Luke Grimm was the star of that drive, with two huge catches to set Arkansas back on their heels.
Grimm is such a stud. I say it every game but he is so, so good and so underappreciated. One of my favorite players on the roster.
— Brendan Dzwierzynski (@BrendanDzw) December 29, 2022
6:54pm: Kansas got the stop here on defense, but I'm thinking they were a bit fortunate on the penalties.
6:52pm: Kansas has all of a sudden gone super conservative on offense.
6:48pm: Didn't matter, as Arkansas scores after a long drive down the field. The Kansas defense looks gassed.
6:35pm: Kansas can't get anything on their first drive, and the pooch punt in the perfect position where a gamble on fourth makes sense has you wondering if they goal now is to try and avoid the margin getting much worse.
It’s inexcusably stupid to punt.
— Bryson Stricker (@BryBryStrick) December 29, 2022
Like I mean this in all honesty it’s like a 2nd grader IQ move to go for it on fourth there. How do people who do this for a living f that up? Lmao it’s a bowl game 😂
6:08pm: Kansas defense just had a Jekyll and Hyde moment. Gave up a huge run after Phelps somehow missed a sack, and then Kenny Logan pushed him while out of bounds. But then OJ Burroughs kept Arkansas off the board with a huge interception in the end zone.
6:02pm: Touchdown for Kansas on an effective drive down the field. The 2-point try was not successful.
2-point conversion attempt fails.#kufball trails 31-13 with 1:18 left in the second quarter.
— Jordan Guskey (@JordanGuskey) December 29, 2022
5:54pm: Kansas is driving, and Quentin Skinner just got leveled on a pass over the middle. No flag was a bit surprising. But he is up and ok it seems.
Jogs off the field. Tough kid. #kufball https://t.co/sKyig7Rvzq
— Conner Becker (@ctbecker) December 28, 2022
5:51pm: Arkansas scored again. It's not looking good for Kansas right now.
Arkansas is absolutely dominating Kansas right now in Memphis. Razorbacks have 301 yards of total offense (KU 150) with a 31-7 lead with 5:02 left in the half. #kufball
— Conner Becker (@ctbecker) December 28, 2022
5:44pm: Kansas seemed to dodge a bullet with a penalty flag getting picked up, but Arkansas got a huge run up the middle to get deep into Kansas territory again.
5:37pm: Kansas can't do anything with it. The offense is really sputtering right now. Daniels is not playing well right now.
That sack was on Daniels. Had plenty of time, just couldn't make a decision
— RCT (@rockchalktalk) December 28, 2022
5:33pm: The defensive line bailed out the Kansas offense there. Big three and out forced and Kansas will get the ball back at their own 45 after a good bounce and Arkansas penalty.
5:29pm: Another long drive by Kansas ends empty, as Daniels and Grimm run different plays and the result is an interception. This could get ugly without a defensive stop.
That's twice now that #KUfball has driven into Arkansas territory looking for points only to have the drive end via a Jalon Daniels INT. That one's gonna hurt. Arkansas takes over at its own 15, leading 24-7 and looking for more.
— Matt Tait (@mctait) December 28, 2022
5:20pm: First quarter is over as Devin Neal catches a 15-yard pass to try and get some positive momentum going. But it's been a record-setting first quarter for Arkansas.
Devin Neal catches the first down pass for 15 yards as the first quarter comes to a close.
— Rock Chalk Podcast (@RockChalkPod) December 28, 2022
24 points scored by Arkansas is the highest single-quarter point total by a team in Liberty Bowl history.
5:16pm: Kansas is giving out yards like candy right now. Arkansas is doing basically whatever they want. Arkansas scores again, but it is being reviewed.
Jayhawk defense in absolute disarray. Arkansas with another TD drive. Offense needs a long, sustained drive just to get their defense some air. 24-7 Razorbacks. @KansanSports
— Joe Blake (@JoeBlake01) December 28, 2022
5:11pm: Big mistake from Daniels there leads to an Arkansas interception.
McAdoo undercuts the Daniels throw. All of his options were covered and McAdoo was waiting. @KansanSports
— Joe Blake (@JoeBlake01) December 28, 2022
5:10pm: Kansas offense is back at it. Huge catches by Arnold and Locklin to put Kansas deep in Arkansas territory.
5:06pm: What a drastic swing. Kansas fumbles the kickoff and then immediately gives up another touchdown. Just like that we are seeing a double-digit deficit.
The over never stood a chance.
— All Jayhawks (@all_jayhawks) December 28, 2022
5:03pm: Arkansas made quick work of that drive. The momentum swing in the last few minutes was huge.
4:58pm: Kansas had a cursed drive there, narrowly avoiding a turnover and going three and out.
Almost got the ball back on the punt, but the refs ruled that the Arkansas player was blocked into the ball.
Ruling is that the Arkansas player was blocked into the ball. Won't matter if it was touched or not.
— Joe Blake (@JoeBlake01) December 28, 2022
4:54pm: Kansas got off the field on third down!
4:50pm: Kansas moves efficiently down the field to take the lead! Daniels hit a WIDE OPEN Ky Thomas to take the lead. The fans on Twitter approve:
Wotelknicki

Kansas touchdown baby! Jalon Daniels is so damn good
— JAKE ELLENBOGEN (@JKBOGEN) December 28, 2022
The Kansas offense rules so hard
— ¡BUM CHILLUPS AKA SPENCER HALL! (@edsbs) December 28, 2022
4:47pm: Kansas already hitting some big plays.
LUKE GRIMM!!
— Rock Chalk Podcast (@RockChalkPod) December 28, 2022
Some miscommunication in the Arkansas secondary as the fake handoff leave Grimm wide open on the right sideline.
4:41pm: Arkansas strikes first, but Kansas holds them to just a field goal. Have to think that both teams felt pretty good about that start.
Holding them to a field goal after that drive is a win. That's fine.
— Brendan Dzwierzynski (@BrendanDzw) December 28, 2022
4:38pm: An awfully familiar sight for Kansas as they get it to third down but can't get off the field.
#kufball's first chance defensively to get off the field on third down sees Arkansas earn a first down.
— Jordan Guskey (@JordanGuskey) December 28, 2022
Now Razorbacks are driving and into Kansas territory after another first down.
4:34pm: Kansas wins the toss and defers to the second half.
#KUfball called heads and it was heads. Kansas will start on defense after deferring to the second half. Game on.
— Matt Tait (@mctait) December 28, 2022
4:09pm: Some lineup updates, including a couple updates that seemed likely based on the depth chart update we posted earlier today.
So, here's a recap of the playing statuses of a few #KUfball players.
— Michael Swain (@MSwain247) December 28, 2022
Likely to play: Kenny Logan
OUT: Trevor Wilson, Jacob Borcila, Daniel Hishaw Jr.
4:05pm: Kansas fans showing out well so far, with the stands on their side (below the press box) pretty full in comparison to across the stadium.
The #kufball side of the stadium is much fuller than the Arkansas side with just under 30 minutes to go until kickoff.
— Andy Mitts (@AndyMitts12) December 28, 2022
Audible "Rock Chalk Jayhawk" chants going back and forth right now as the pregame program starts
3:35pm: Kansas fans excited to see their team.
A smattering of applause as @KU_Football takes the field for warmups.#kufball pic.twitter.com/JJZxLtWmi7
