With the season opener upon us, we are finally able to start talking about real action on the football field in something that actually counts towards the season. But the first opponent is an FCS opponent that the Kansas Jayhawks are expected to beat handily. But just because the result isn't in doubt, that doesn't mean there aren't some key things that I'm expecting for tonight to be successful.

Throughout the season, this article is going to focus on the keys necessary for Kansas to be successful. Usually that means win the game, but not always. So without ffurther delay, let's look at the keys to tonight's game:

Start Fast

Last season saw Kansas jump on Tennessee Tech early and often, and many of the players and coaches credited the quick start in that game as a catalyst for the rest of the season. The offense showed their ability early, and the defense built confidence in that game.

If you are looking to build confidence in the defense for this season, they can't afford to let Missouri State get the best of them, even if it is just for a small period at the beginning of the game. The coaches and players have talked up the defensive line all camp. Let's see how impressive they can be, despite the competition level.

Use the Depth

One of the biggest questions coming into the season was if the Jayhawks had significantly improved their depth, especially on the defense. We all know that the starters are just as prepared as they were going into last season, but the players that are either in new roles or new to the team could really use some playing time. Playing against each other in practice can only go so far, so getting that fast start to get them on the field will be crucial to future development.

Stay Healthy

The most important thing for tonight is that the Jayhawks avoid any major injuries. That means that with Jalon Daniels' reported back tightness not resolved, I don't expect to see him play the majority of the snaps at quarterback. But keeping him from aggravating that injury is the most important thing from him tonight. Kansas has a lot of depth to work with, but losing any of it here could cause significant issues down the road.
