For the second time this season, the Kansas Jayhawks have had a player honored with a weekly award in football. After Cobee Bryant was tabbed as the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in Week 4 against BYU, punt returner Trevor Wilson was named the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week after his 82-yard punt return for a touchdown on Saturday against the UCF Knights.

While he hasn't had many opportunities on the season, he has made the most of them. The Jayhawks have only returned three punts this season, including two by Wilson, and lead the nation with an average of 31.0 yards per return. Wilson's return was the fifth-longest in Kansas history and the longest one in the conference this season.

This was the first punt return for a touchdown since 2014, when Nick Harwell did it against the West Virginia Mountaineers. It was the first special teams touchdown since Cobee Bryant returned a blocked field goal attempt against Tennessee Tech in the opener last year.

Wilson has scored a touchdown in two straight weeks, as he also scored on a 58-yard pass from Jason Bean early in the second quarter against the Texas Longhorns.

This is the first player of the week award for Wilson, who is the 16th Jayhawk player to be named as the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week. The last one was Pooka Williams Jr during the 2020 season.
