It’s always interesting to learn more about a player on and off the field from another person around that individual. That’s exactly what we got from Josiah Hammond’s mother (Melisha)

Josiah Hammond is a defensive lineman/edge rusher prospect from Will Rogers High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He is unranked and recently received his Kansas Jayhawks offer. Following his offer his mother spoke with Blue Wings Rising to give us a behind-the-scenes look into the life of Josiah Hammond.

“Josiah has always been an exceptionally gifted and talented kid,” Melisha stated to Blue Wings Rising. “He doesn't have a cockiness attitude about himself or what God has blessed him with. He is just out there having fun.”

“Looking at his film and watching him play everyone says, "He is such a beast! He is a force! You don't want to see him come rushing at you." But off the field, he is the complete opposite. He is affectionately called "The gentle giant!" All the little kids love him. He is always playing around and goofing off. He is so loving and takes care of those around him. He helps take down his little God sister's hair, helps at dance recitals, and plays tag with his little cousins. I took a picture of him laying on his sister on Super Bowl Sunday a moment I just wanted to freeze. I couldn't have asked for a better son. I've always called him my Golden Child.”

Melisha dove deeper into the facts about Josiah in school. “Josiah is a great scholar! We came to an understanding a long time ago. Without school there are no sports “ Melisha stated. “Books first, ball 2nd. Even when he faces challenges in school he faces them head-on and comes out on the upper side.” “He is an encourager on and off the field. No matter if they are down or up he is bringing a motivating vibe to go get it until the very end. At home, if he sees his sister or myself struggling he can say something to make the situation lighter. He always reminds me, "Don't worry mama. We got this!" And it's always the "We" for me. Because I've taught them to love God and each other.”

She broke down what she believed he could take to a program like Kansas. “His hard work and dedication on and off the field. He is well-rounded and not afraid to try new things. His G.A.M.E time (God and me every day) spirit is contagious!”
