Kentucky basketball coach Mark Pope shares his biggest concern with his team

In this story:
Big Blue Nation is very excited to see this year’s Kentucky basketball team take the floor when November rolls around, and it sounds like the Wildcats had a really good summer camp. The summer has come to an end for Pope and the Wildcats, and for the most part, Coach Pope is happy.
There are some areas where this Kentucky team needs to improve, and one of those areas is something that might be hard to fix. Coach Pope joined the Field of 68 yesterday, and one of the things he discussed was his biggest concern with this team.

Here is what Coach Pope had to say about his biggest concern with this team: “Everybody in college basketball has gotten so big and physical. That’s not us right now. We are long, fast and skilled. We have some togetherness that’s going to translate to toughness for us, but we’re going to be challenged in terms of brute strength and physicality.”
I like that Coach Pope is being honest with the potential struggle he sees this team having with physicality. This is definitely a problem, but there are ways that Pope’s team can overcome this struggle. The first thing the Wildcats have to do is make sure they are playing harder than any other team in college basketball. There is no question that this team is lacking in some areas, but they are a very tall and long team, which will create good things on the defensive end of the floor.

While some of Kentucky’s players are a bit on the skinny side, physicality is something that doesn’t come from size; it comes from the brain. Many times, in college sports, fans will see a really small player who just wants it more than the other team. That needs to be the mentality of the players on this year’s Kentucky team, knowing in matchups like the one with Florida the Wildcats are going to lack some mass.
Every college basketball team has problems and concerns, and this Kentucky team is no different. At the same time, the Wildcats are going to be an elite offensive team, so if they can just be serviceable on defense, they could be elite. Pope did voice this struggle, but overall, in his interview with The Field Of 68, he did seem really excited about his team and the work they did this summer.
