LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Louisville men's basketball program is one step closer to landing their top target in the 2024 cycle.

Tampa (Fla.) Catholic small forward Karter Knox, one of the top prospects in the Class of 2024, trimmed his list of top schools from eight to four on Thursday with the Cardinals still in the running. Kentucky, South Florida and the NBA G-League are also still vying for his commitment; while Auburn, Arkansas, Florida State and LSU were excluded.

Kenny Payne identified Knox as a target very early on his tenure as Louisville's head coach, offering him a scholarship in June of 2022. He was just the second 2024 prospect to receive a Louisville offer, behind only Modesto (Calif.) Christian shooting guard Jamari Phillips, and took an official visit last October during the weekend of Louisville Live.

There's also a family connection to Payne. Knox's older brother Kevin, who currently plays for the Portland Trailblazers, played for Payne when he was an assistant coach at Kentucky. Kevin was selected by the New York Knicks with the No. 9 overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft.

“We talk pretty frequently (with Kenny Payne)," Knox told On3's Joe Tipton. "He really tells me the same thing. He thinks I can go to the league, turn the Louisville team around, and be a one-and-done. He thinks since he got my brother to the league then he can get me to the league also.”

The 6-foot-5, 205-pound wing is a consensus five-star prospect amongst the four major recruiting services. He ranks the No. 11 player in the 2024 cycle according to the 247Sports Composite.

Knox was a stat sheet stuffer during his junior season for Tampa Catholic. He put up 19.8 points, 9.9 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.7 steals and 1.2 blocks per game, while also shooting 50 percent from the field. In three years at the high school level, he has amassed 1,621 points, 653 rebounds, 211 assists, 130 steals and 90 blocks.

Not only would he be a tremendous get for the Cardinals, he's one that they need in a big way. Louisville currently sports just one commitment in the 2024 cycle - coming in the form of Montclair (N.J.) Immaculate Conception point guard T.J. Robinson - and as of this writing, the Cardinals have offered just five uncommitted prospects in the cycle including Knox.
