In a minute-to-minute, ever changing environment that we are currently experiencing in college athletics, you almost need a Master of Laws degree to keep up.

Recently, a ruling in Colorado that granted an initial “blanket clearance” for the class of 2022 to gain an extra year of eligibility was approved.  It was a class that entered the collegiate athletic ranks in the traditional four-season system.  With Covid eligibility waivers and the newly approved “5-in-5” rule implemented for the 2026-2027 athletic calendar going forward, the class of 2022 was stuck in the middle with four years to compete and argues they were at a major disadvantage eligibility and NIL opportunity wise.

On top of the Colorado ruling, many athletes from the Class of 2022 went to state jurisdictions to gain an extra layer of certainty for a fifth year of eligibility.

The NCAA appealed the ruling in Colorado for an extra year of eligibility and won this morning, making the “blanket clearance” a no go and deeming those players ineligible.  However, the athletes that filed injunctions in individual states are winning appeals and still eligible.

The NCAA can fight those rulings as well.  Everything is completely in flux and leaves coaches, administrators and athletes in a mess regarding the class of 2022.

What this means for Louisville

On the football side: linebacker Kalib Perry, safety D’Angelo Hutchinson & cornerback Jabari Mack were set to return.

Hutchinson and Mack are still cleared as they were ruled eligible in a case in Louisville, Kentucky in the last week.  This could be appealed by the NCAA at any moment.

Perry was under the nationwide, Colorado ruling and is not eligible at the moment.

On the basketball side: Seth Trimble, the shooting guard from UNC that Louisville announced they signed at 9 AM this morning, did not go through a state case and is also currently not eligible.

Guard London Johnson was also dismissed from the team for violation of team rules this afternoon as well.

Some major shakeups for both sports, but everything changes by the moment and more appeals and cases in different jurisdictions will continue to arise.  Stay tuned for updates.
