In this story:

Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell is quickly making a name for himself in the SEC, and LSU will have its hands full when it faces the freshman quarterback Saturday in Baton Rouge.

Russell was named a semifinalist for the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award, adding another accomplishment to an already productive season. Through eight games, Russell has thrown for 2,057 yards and 15 touchdowns while adding 251 yards and five touchdowns on the ground.

For the LSU defense, the challenge won't necessarily be figuring out how to expose an inexperienced freshman quarterback. Russell has already shown he can produce through the air and on the ground. Instead, the Tigers will have to find ways to limit what has made the Alabama offense effective without allowing Russell to take advantage of opportunities when plays break down.

Keelon Russell's production changes the conversation

By now, Russell has given opposing defenses enough film to understand that his production isn't simply a product of being a young quarterback who has caught teams off guard. Through eight games, Russell has completed 148 of 221 passes, a 67% completion rate. He is averaging 9.31 yards per pass attempt, a mark that leads the SEC and ranks 12th nationally.

For reference, Russell is also averaging 13.90 yards per completion, ranking second in the SEC. Those numbers show that Alabama isn't just relying on short, easy completions to move the football. Russell hasbeen able to generate significant yardage through the passing game while maintaining an efficient completion rate.

That is where LSU's defensive approach becomes important. Simply putting pressure on Russell and expecting him to make freshman mistakes could be a dangerous way to approach the matchup. He has thrown five interceptions, but his overall production shows that he has been able to make plays consistently.

The Tigers will need to find a way to disrupt that rhythm without giving Russell opportunities to make the defense pay for being too aggressive.

LSU must account for Russell's ability to run

Russell's passing production is only part of what makes him a different challenge for LSU. The Alabama quarterback has also recorded 251 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns on 66 carries this season.

While Russell isn't necessarily Alabama's primary rushing threat, his ability to make plays with his legs adds another dimension to the offense. His season-long rushing numbers include a 57-yard touchdown against Florida State, showing what can happen when a defense loses track of him outside the pocket.

For LSU, that means keeping Russell contained will be just as important as applying pressure.Defensive linemen will have to be mindful of their positioning, while the linebackers will need to account for Russell if he decides to take off rather than throw the football.

There is a difference between getting pressure on a quarterback and actually stopping him. If LSU sends extra defenders after Russell but leaves running lanes open, the Tigers could end up creating opportunities for him to extend plays and move the chains.

LSU's defensive approach could determine the matchup

For LSU, the challenge against Alabama is finding a balance between pressuring Russell, keeping him contained and limiting the passing opportunities that have made him so productive.

The Tigers cannot afford to sell out against the pass and leave open running lanes, but they also cannot give Russell too much time to find receivers downfield. It will take a disciplined defensive effort to make sure one area of the game doesn't come at the expense of another.

Russell's freshman status may be part of the conversation surrounding his season, especially after being named a semifinalist for the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award. However, his production through eight games suggests LSU needs to prepare for what he has already shown he can do rather than what might be expected from a young quarterback.

Alabama is bringing a quarterback into Baton Rouge who has thrown for more than 2,000 yards, accounted for 20 touchdowns and established himself as one of the SEC's more productive passers. For LSU, the goal will be making sure Russell doesn't get comfortable doing what he has done all season.
