Miami Baseball Remains an Omaha Dark Horse Thanks To One Stat

Even with the slow start to the season, the Miami Hurricanes have history on their side for a College Baseball World Series appearance.

The start of the season saw the Miami Hurricanes perform at an outstanding level offensively, with some questionable bullpen opportations.

The Hurricanes would go on to find themselves losing in back-to-back weekends to rival in-state school Florida and a resurgent Boston College team. However, the Hurricanes are also dealing with injuries.

Those injuries have kept the rotation from swinging one direction to another. Miami's bullpen also continues to struggle.

However, the only area that has been their saving grace has been midweek competition, and it could be the key to the Hurricanes' deep run back to the College Baseball World Series.

Omaha is a sore subject for Canes faithful who have been desperate for a return to a place they called home. Miami is a blue-blood baseball program, but over the past decade, the program has lain dormant.

Moreover, many had become frustrated with the program and where it was heading. However, even with most still questioning J.D. Arteaga's ability, the team got hot at the right time at the end of last season, reaching their first super regional since 2016, and was one inning away from returning to Omaha.

During that 2016 season, it was the last time the Canes made the trip across the country. Moreover, a key stat during that last ride to Omaha can give this team hope that they are on the same trajectory.

The last time the Hurricanes went 8-0, it was midweek in 2016. Canes started 9-0 and finished 12-1. It was also the last time they went to Omaha. The Hurricanes are currently 8-0 with a series sweep of No. 23 UCF in those outings.

Omaha has been the goal on opening day, and it's going to continue to be the goal with a loaded offense.

Miami has two superstar hitters who have guided them throughout the ups and downs of the season so far. Third baseman Daniel Cuvet is batting .311 across 29 games with 33 hits, nine doubles, 10 home runs, and 36 RBI. He leads the team with 79 total bases and carries a .679 slugging percentage.

After is Derek Williams, who has also started all 29 games and is batting .415 with 44 hits, 11 doubles, 10 home runs, and 47 RBI. He has totaled 88 bases while posting an .830 slugging percentage and a .500 on-base percentage.

Both have been named midseason All-Americans and for good cause.

However, if the Canes want to make it to Omaha, they have to figure out their bullpen. The Starting rotation of AJ Ciscar and Rob Evans has served as a good starting point, but once others enter the game in relief, it can collapse at any time.

The Canes have a trend of getting the bases loaded each game and not taking advantage of it. That is another area where they need to find improvement as well.

Nevertheless, the Canes have won eight of their last nine games, and against the Virginia Tech Hokies, the Canes look to extend those wins in ACC play.
