In this story:

The Miami Hurricanes are battling the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in the Pinstripe Bowl. Going to provide thoughts about the game as it unfolds. First up, looking at the first quarter overall and then updates thereafter as they come.

Rutgers Beats Miami, 31-24

5:50 - It's all but over here unless there's a big turnover. I will have thoughts on the final score, Jacurri Brown, and the future of Miami football, with articles tonight and tomorrow. Just wanted to let everyone know.

6:50 - Rutgers is just running now.

8:05 - 6-yard run. 4th and 1, and it's a first down on a short play off the left side.

8:50 - It's third down and 7.

9:47 - Absolutely stuffed. Parrish had no place to go. Tip of the cap to the Rutgers' defensive front. They stoned UM.

4th and 2 - Miami at its own 45. Miami calls timeout after seeing the defensive alignment.

10:40 - Miami has it and it's 3rd and 5, Brown drops back....no! It's a run?

11:07 - Tremendous play call but George drops the pop pass. 2nd and ten.

11:51 - Nice throw over the middle to Jacolby George. It's 11 yards and a 1st down.

Miami will start at its 25 after the touchback.

STATS UPDATE - Monangai is at 160 yards and a touchdown. He's averaging 7 yards per carry. Miami has only 97 yards on the ground as a team. Passing the football, Rutgers is only residing with 84 yards but lead by 11. A big part of that is the blocked punt for a touchdown. That's the biggest play of the contest, by far. As a team, Rutgers is playing keep away from the Canes. Rutgers has 27:07 time of possession compared to Miami's 21:02.

11:51 - Touchdown Rutgers on the short run by Wimsatt. Rutgers 28 Miami 17

12:36 - Miami stuffs Wimsatt. It's second down from inside the 1.

There's an officials' review about Monangai's run. He did not score. Come on...

13:08 - Huge play again. A 40-yard run by Monangai. Down to the UM 1.

14:54 - Power run by Monangai. Pickup of 9 off the left side.

It's Miami linebacker Wesley Bissainthe that's down on the ground after a tackle of Monangai. TV Timeout.

Start of 4th quarter....

:30 - Miami completes it to Restrepo, but he's short of the third quarter. Time to punt, as the third quarter ends.

1:06 - Brown just attempted to force a pass to Restrepo. Poor decision. He was double-covered.

1:13 - Dumb penalty by Miami's Bobby Washington by hitting the Rutgers punter. What in the world was he thinking?

1:30 - Rutgers is lucky to get that pass back, too! It's Francis Mauigoa with the deflection. Poor decision by Wimsatt to throw that pas!

OHHHHHHHH - It's safety Markeith Williams that almost had a pick-six. Late throw by Wimsatt....so close!

2:16 - Joyce with a 50-yard punt down to the Rutgers 25.

3:09 - Coverage sack. Brown just held the football far too long. Canes will punt.

3:54 - Ajay Allen with a nice inside run. It's 3rd and 9....

4:18 - Restrepo with the screen pass. He's close to a 1st down. But....George is penalized for holding. He honestly never really blocked. He just grabbed the Rutgers cornerback.

5:06 - After the touchback, Miami's 1st and ten play is a quarterback keeper up the middle. It's 2nd down and 7.

Big Moment! Canes need a drive here. Need to gain back the momentum.

5:30 - Nice play by Rutgers to thwart the swing pass to Parrish. Canes punt is blocked!

HORRRRRRRIBLE blocking. Two different Rutgers players were close. Unreal. Touchdown Scarlet Knights.

Rutgers 21 Miami 17

:30 - Another third down situation. Miami needs at least one here to not punt from its own end zone.

7:55 - Bain almost gets home. It's fourth down and 5. Rutgers will punt. Miami is starting its next drive at the 7. Excellent kick by Scarlet Knights punter Flynn Appleby.

Timeout.

8:13 - Just a bit overthrown on the bomb. 3rd down and ten....Look out for Rueben Bain, Jr!

8:21 - Incomplete pass after Rutgers gains a first down. Big down for the Canes. Rutgers is not built for obvious passing downs.

10:00 - Rutgers needs to turn the tide here. Gonna be a key drive.

STATS UPDATE - Brown is now 10 of 14 for 111 yards, 71.4%, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception. He has hit 7 of his last 8 passes, 79 yards, and the touchdown.

Restrepo is at 6 receptions for 73 yards and 1 score.

Miami has scored the last 17 points!

Boom!

Touchdown for Restrepo on the corner route! Beautiful throw and a fantastic catch and toe-tap by the junior receiver. Spectacular!

It's Miami 17 Rutgers 14 - 10:33 in the 3rd quarter

10:51 - Wham! Downhill, it's Henry Parrish, Jr. with the run off the left side. 11-yard gain. But....It's a 15-yard penalty on Jacolby George. Poor judgment and George needs to take a seat for a while. Terrible decision.

11:30 - It's Ajay Allen for a 3-yard gain.

12:10 - Goodness! Jacolby George is fast after the pop pass. And 1st down and 10.

12:41 - Riley Williams with a nice run after a short throw. 1st and 10 Canes.

Third Quarter - Nice start to the quarter with Brown running a few times.

HALFTIME STATS AND NOTES - Big props to Rutgers as its offensive line is doing a pretty good job of opening running lanes. If it's not for a few big plays in the backfield by Miami, Rutgers could be up much more than it is. So far, Rutgers has 92 rushing yards. For the season, Miami only allows 91.1 yards per game.

Miami was dreadful in the first quarter and then came alive from the 1st play of the second quarter onward. The Canes outgained the Scarlet Knights 104-55.

Miami quarterback Jacurri Brown is starting to show promise. He's at 8 of 12 for 68 yards. More importantly, the end of the second quarter shows his talent. He hit 5 of his last six with that one miss being the overruled touchdown pass to Restrepo.

Miami safety Markeith Williams has 6 tackles already. Good to see a player step up with Kamren Kinchens and James Williams off to the NFL.

The Andres Borregales field goal is good. Rutgers leads 14-10 at halftime. Stats in a few minutes, along with first-half thoughts.

:04 - Backshoulder-fade is overruled....Still a fantastic throw by Jacurri Brown to Xavier Restrepo. Tough luck there.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!

TOUCHDOWN HURRICANES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:09 - Miami is at the Rutgers 17.

One second added to the clock.

:16 - Miami is down to the Rutgers 24 as the play is overruled!

Did Horton catch that inbounds?

:21 - Nice pass to Restrepo. Out of bounds after a first down. Then a 15 yard unsportsmanlike penalty on Rutgers.

Note: Miami has to be a better end-of-half and end-of-game team with timeouts. More on that in an upcoming article.

:33 - Parrish, Jr. with a 16-yard run, and then Restrepo with a 9-yard reception and steps out of bounds.

Restrepo with a nice gain on first down for 9.

Why no timeout after the big tackle for loss? Miami holds on a third down incompletion, but why didn't Mario Cristobal call timeout?

1:42 - Miami is playing harder now. No doubt. 2nd and 10, Rutgers quarterback Gavin Wimsatt is eaten up in the backfield!

Jacurri Brown around left end for the score! Canes are back in it!

Rutgers 14 Miami 7

3:57 - Parrish with another inside run, and his driving legs allow for the first down! 1st and goal from the 5!

4:39 - Powerful run by Henry Parrish, Jr. Third down and 2!

5:00 - Miami has to take advantage. 2nd and 8 from the 15.

6:15 - Face mask for 15 yards, and then a late hit by the same Rutgers player, Aaron Lewis.

Ajay Allen with a nice inside run for the first down!

Rutgers calls timeout after seeing UM's formation.

OPINION: Brown has a natural passing motion, that is "if" he settles down and does not rush his throws. Big 3rd down and 2 coming up.

6:44 - That last pass by Brown shows his inexperience. Poor footwork leads to a pass being way short and it's just a quick screen to Restrepo.

That would be TARGETING! Huge hit directly with the crown of the helmet! What in the world are the refs looking at?

7:37 - Brown with a really nice back-shoulder fade to Isaiah Horton. That's a pretty pass and catch. 16 yards and a Miami first down!

7:41 - Miami has been outgained 147 to 6.

8:20 - Rutgers 14 Miami 0 - 7:37 2nd

Horrible tackling by Miami and huge props to Rutgers wide receiver Christian Dremel for hitting a 23-yard play, and Rutgers scores on the next play. It's Kyle Monangai who goes around the right end from 7 yards.

This could get ugly.

9:30 - Say hello to Rueben Bain, Jr.!

9:42 - Miami defensive tackle Branson Deen jumps off sides...ugh.

10:05 - Miami has a big defensive stand opportunity. 4th and short at their 33.

11:51 - Horrible read by Miami's Brown. Stared down his receiver, double-patted the football, and then threw it right to Rutgers linebacker Abram Wright. Just awful.

Injury Note: Nothing is definitively known yet, but freshman running back Mark Fletcher, Jr. is out with what looks to be a lower leg or ankle injury. Will update you when possible.

13:13 2nd quarter: Miami ball! 53-yard field goal attempt missed by Rutgers. The Canes will start their second drive from the 36. Good field position.

2nd quarter start: From the first two snaps, Miami looks completely different! It's like the two teams switched uniforms!

1st quarter in a nutshell: Rutgers is far more physical, especially its offensive line. The first drive saw running back Kyle Monangai rush 6 times for 48 yards, including the first play from scrimmage going 22 yards right through the middle of the Miami defense.

After one quarterback, Rutgers is outgaining UM .... wait for it ... 115 to 5. yes, 115 to 5. Miami is out of sync and being overpowered.

The other disappointment would be a really nice pass from Jacurri Brown not being caught by wide receiver Jacolby Brown. That was a big miss.
