Transfer Portal Impact: What's Miami Getting With Jamil Burroughs?

In this story:

The Miami Hurricanes have found their man. It just did not happen in the manner many people may have thought.

Just the other day, fellow All Hurricanes member Alex Donno was mentioning how Miami needed to find at least one more defensive tackle to go along with Artavius Jones. Ask and you shall receive!

The most recent Miami Transfer Portal addition would be Jamil Burroughs from the University of Alabama.

Looking back at Donno's point, the Canes 2024 recruiting class has needed at least two defensive tackles – and three would likely be better – since this class started to take shape. Having added Burroughs, the number of high school defensive tackle recruits needed could potentially have changed and kept at two.

It’s never been easy to find 6-foot-3 and 310-pound interior defensive lineman like Burroughs, so this was a coup for the Canes. There could be one unfortunate aspect of him transferring the way he did.

Burroughs may not be able to play this season (timing with the Transfer Portal being open) unless the NCAA clears him with a waiver. There’s also been a bright side to consider.

Because 2020 college football players get that year back due to COVID-19, Burroughs technically only utilized two years of eligibility thus far and could potentially play three seasons for the Hurricanes. Again, that’s if the NCAA grants him a waiver for 2023. A little more about Burroughs and how he came to this point.

Burroughs was recruited by Nick Saban and his staff to play defensive tackle, as he was over 300 pounds entering his senior year at Powder Springs (Ga.) McEachern. He has always been a big-bodied defensive tackle with the athleticism to play at a high level.

Burroughs was one of the nation’s most coveted 2020 prospects and could have gone to numerous schools, but instead he selected Alabama. Here were the statistics for Burroughs from the 2022 season:

11 games played, 8 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 2 quarterback hurries and a sack. Part of a crowded defensive tackle depth chart, Burroughs has now gained a chance to shine at a new school.
