In this story:

No matter how a person slices it, the Miami Hurricanes continue to give themselves self-inflicted wounds via turnovers. Sure, one can discuss big passing plays, the top-notch Miami rush defense during the 2023 Miami schedule, and several other important statistics.

At the end of the day, there’s no substitute for not turning the football over. For that, Miami is guilty. Heading into the game at Boston College, Miami is #100 in the nation in turnover margin by being minus-four in that always important category.

By the numbers, here are statistical trends with Miami’s total turnovers through 11 games:

Versus FBS Opponents

: 10 games, 6 lost fumbles, 13 interceptions, for 19 total.

Versus Power 5 Opponents

: 8 games, 6 lost fumbles, 12 interceptions, for 18 total.

Games With No Turnovers

: Temple and Louisville. Miami lost to the Cardinals despite no turnovers, which is unusual. Louisville committed just one turnover, however.

One Turnover

: Miami goes 4-1 when it commits one turnover; the lone loss is Florida State as the Seminoles did not commit any turnovers.

Two Turnovers

: Miami defeats Virginia despite losing the battle by giving up two turnovers and gaining just one.

Three Turnovers

: Miami does not have a game with three turnovers.

Four Turnovers

: Against North Carolina and North Carolina State combined, Miami is outscored 61-37. Eight total turnovers from those two games, four in each.

Five Turnovers

: Georgia Tech wins, just barely, even with five turnovers by the Hurricanes (yes, that was still not the proper call on the last fumble but the point remains).

Moving forward, this Miami team must figure out how to hold onto the football. That effort continues against Boston College this Friday. The good news would be the Canes have one turnover combined from their last two contests.
