In this story:

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — The Miami Hurricanes finished their second scrimmage ahead of their Stanford season opener on Sept. 4, and to Mario Cristobal, there is still much to do.

Taking it day by day and going "1-0" is the motto the Hurricanes and Cristobal are preaching, but after this scrimmage, the Canes have a better understanding of what it looks like and how far they still have to go.

They have two weeks before they take their first official snap, and Cristobal reviews what he likes and dislikes about this season early on.

"Progress," Cristobal said, reviewing the second scrimmage. "Guys getting better. Some a little bit more advanced than others, but others catching up fast. Finding the opportunity to get more guys … guys that we can trust more in certain situations. Other guys still have to earn trust. But the competition continues on. This is no different than any other day of camp.

"They have to go to class right now. They’ve got to come back. We’ve got to go to meetings. We’ve got to lift. We’ve got to watch that film. We’ve got to go get better."

The Hurricanes have a stander to keep after back-to-back 10-win seasons with expectations to go 11-1, or 12-0 this season. However, Cristobal and everyone knows that they are far from where they want to be at this current moment.

With two more weeks to work things out, understanding what needs to be done is what the Hurricanes coaching staff is working on.

I think our players do understand that … that’s the only way to get the best out of everybody.," Cristobal said. "We’ve got to press each other as coaches up there. We’ve got to hold ourselves accountable. Did we make the right call? Did we put in the right personnel group? Did we play the right guy at the right position? Are we actually executing our assignments on a consistent basis? And are we playing with relentless effort?

"Are we willing to completely exhaust ourselves to finish that block? To finish on the play? Finish on the quarterback? Get the ball carrier on the ground? All those things were put out there on display on the field on the field. We’ll have a chance to grade this thing just like a game and then we’ll get together tonight.

"Tonight’s an important night. We’ll get to sit down and get in depth of what it is to be a Miami Hurricane, follow it up with a very special presentation and video that should hit everybody right between the eyes and further galvanize us in our culture and just go back to work and get better."
