If a football fan has leaned towards watching players that can play from different positions, then Dylan Day will be a great prospect to learn more about for the Canes' 2024 recruiting class.

Heck, even just watching his junior defensive film was fun. Day committed to Miami Hurricanes defensive coordinator and safeties coach Lance Guidry on April 16, 2023. That was a sign that Miami’s coaching staff truly trusted what they saw, because for some reason, Day’s recruitment never took off.

It should have. Here’s a look at the talented playmaker from the Bayou State.

Size: 6-foot, 170 pounds

Positions: Cornerback, Safety and Wide Receiver

High School: Baton Rouge (La.) Southern Lab

Recruitment

In addition to Miami, Day has held offers from the likes of Arizona State, Baylor, Tulane, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Maryland, Marshall, Georgia Tech and Arkansas State.

Frame

Lean. Day has resembled the look of a Division I point guard with a muscular build, but playing football. Quite frankly, he looked like a pure athlete as much as he proved it on the gridiron.

Athleticism

Sudden and twitchy, Day’s ability to make quick movements towards the football or ball carrier were definitive. His speed was good in the open field, but it’s those first few steps that truly stood out on film.

The ability to suddenly jump, change direction, or hit the gas also gave one the notion that he could have been a point guard in hoops.

Despite being 170 pounds, he showcased “pop” when hitting a ball carrier, too.

Instincts

It was uncanny just how many times Day baited the opposing quarterback into throwing the football and then jumping the route. His penchant for getting his hands on passes was tremendous.

Also, the timing with which he went for the football at the precise moment was a thing of beauty.

Physicality

Okay, Day was not the biggest player during his junior season. That did not stop him from laying a lick. He drilled several players when it was obvious a head-on collision was coming and he did not back down. If he caught a runner off guard, too bad for that guy, too.

In coverage, Day bodied up to receivers and would not be pushed around. That was arguably the most important aspect of his physicality. It will serve him well moving forward as well.

Hand-Eye Coordination

He snagged the football away from receivers during multiple plays, and he also did a great job of catching the football away from his body when playing wide receiver.

In short, catching the football came easily for Day.

Position Flexibility

With all of his talents, where will he play at the Power 5 level? Well, that depends on the situation for at least one position.

He’s modern-day nickel safety for sure, i.e. the ability to play in the slot and go against players of all different sizes and talents. That’s invaluable within itself.

Due to his ballhawking skills in the deep secondary, he could grow into a free safety role during traditional first and ten situations. Cornerback would seem to be just as likely with his quickness and speed.

Maybe Day ends up playing multiple roles during his college career with the Hurricanes. Whatever position(s) he does play, Miami found a gem that was under recruited by many of the big boys of college football.
