Michigan Football's 'Most Intense' Defensive Battle has 5 or 6 Players in the Mix

The Wolverines are hoping that a few players start to really separate themselves in the coming weeks.

When thinking about the Michigan defense, most of the spots are secured. There is still a battle brewing to see who starts on the other side of All-American edge John Henry Daley, but the secondary is cemented with Rod Moore back.

The one position that appears to be entirely up for grabs is at linebacker. Michigan is still searching to find who separates themselves the most in the group, and according to defensive coordinator Jay Hill, he feels confident in six of the players at that position through three weeks of fall camp.

"You ask about the linebacker group, I think that group continues to solidify themselves every day," Hill said. "There are six right now that I think we can win with and it continues to be a battle as to who's in there with the ones and who's in with the twos. But for the most part, I see that group continue to elevate."

With the linebacker position being so wide open and having five or six players trying to fill two or three roles — it's going to be intense. As of now, no player has been named a starter, and while Hill wants to see players cement themselves, he believes it's a good problem to have.

"Well, probably linebacker," Hill said. "There's, like I say, there's really five or six guys that I feel comfortable about playing in games. I'd like to see some of those guys just completely cement themselves as the starter, but that's a good problem that we have right now."

Nathaniel Staehling waits for the play

Fans might not have known a ton about Nathaniel Staehling when he transferred to Michigan, but he was one of the top linebackers on the Wolverines' board. He didn't participate in spring as he was dealing with an injury.

But now with fall camp well underway, he has been a name that continues to emerge.

"Yeah, Nathaniel's doing a really good job," said Hill. "You see a player that's played a lot of college football. He does a good job staying square, does a good job being physical, knows his assignments. He's really picked up the defense fast. So I'm excited about his future and what he's doing right now."

Staehling is certainly going to play a lot for Michigan this season, but we would also expect the trio of Troy Bowles, Chase Taylor, and Nathaniel Owusu-Boateng to see their fair share of snaps this season. Jay Hill is saying he has five or six guys, but expect that core four to see the lion's share in 2026.
