Six Spartans Selected on Final Day of 2015 MLB Draft
Spartans set a school record with eight draft choices.
EAST LANSING - Six members of the Michigan State baseball program were selected in the 2015 Major League Baseball Draft on Wednesday, June 10. The selections on Wednesday bring the total number of Spartans chosen in this year’s three-day draft to eight – the most in MSU history.
Wednesday’s selections included: pitcher Anthony Misiewicz, selected by the Seattle Mariners in the 18th round (545 overall); pitcher Cam Vieaux, selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 19th round (580 overall); pitcher Jeff Kinley, selected by the Miami Marlins in the 28th round (836 overall); pitcher Mick VanVossen, selected by the Washington Nationals in the 28th round (854 overall); designated hitter/catcher Blaise Salter, selected by Detroit in the 31st round (940 overall) and third baseman Mark Weist, selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 37th round (1116 overall).
Cam Gibson (Detroit, fifth round, 160 overall) and Ryan Krill (New York Yankees, ninth round, 273 overall) were both drafted on Tuesday.
Misiewicz tied a career best with five wins (5-4) in a career-high 68.2 innings of work in 2015. He posted a 3.80 ERA and held opponents to a .207 batting average – the second lowest on the team. The native of Anchor Bay made 18 appearances, including eight starts.
Misiewicz earned wins against Southeast Louisiana (Feb. 22), Oregon (April 5), Northwestern (April 11), Rutgers (April 18) and Penn State (May 9). The lefty tied a career high with nine Ks in 6.1 innings of relief at Minnesota (May 15).
As a sophomore, he ranked second on the team with 29 appearances and held opposing batters to a .228 batting average - the sixth-best mark in the Big Ten. He ranked second on the team and fourth in the conference with 68 strikeouts.
During his freshman season in 2013, Misiewicz was 5-1 with a 1.60 ERA in 19 appearances.
In three seasons he is 13-12 with a 3.26 ERA and 146 strikeouts in 169.1 innings.
Vieaux went 4-7 with a 3.49 ERA in a team-high 15 starts in 2015. He led the team in innings pitched (90.1) and strikeouts (71). His 71 Ks were tied for eighth most in the Big Ten.
Vieaux went at least five innings in each of his first five starts, including on March 15 vs. UConn where he struck out a team-season and career high 13 batters in 6.1 innings of work. The Spartans were the only team to defeat Illinois during the regular season and it was Vieaux that earned the win against the Illini on March 29 as he allowed one run over seven innings.
Vieaux picked up road wins at Oregon on April 4, with seven strikeouts in six innings, and at Rutgers on April 17. He allowed just one earned run in 6.1 innings vs. Maryland in the opening game of the Big Ten Tournament.
He was an All-Big Ten Freshman Team selection in 2014 as he transitioned to a starting role during the season and went on to post a 6-5 record and 3.18 ERA.
He has a career 3.35 ERA and 128 strikeouts in 161.0 innings of work.
Kinley completed his career as the Spartans’ all-time saves leader with 20. In 2015, he made the late-season transition to starter for the first time in his career; the last five of his 25 appearances on the season all came as a starter. He went 4-3 with a 3.56 ERA and compiled a career-best 55 strikeouts.
The left-hander set the school saves record on April 3 at Oregon, pitching one scoreless inning with two strikeouts. He picked up his second save of the year vs. Michigan at Comerica Park on April 14 in a 4-2 win.
In his first start in his 89th-career appearance on April 26, Kinley pitched the Spartans to a 3-2 win over Indiana as he allowed one run of three hits and struck out a career-best seven betters in 6.1 innings to get the victory. He tossed a career-high 7.0 innings and allowed just one run to earn the win over Penn State on May 10.
As a junior in 2014, Kinley set the school record and led the Big Ten with 13 saves ... Made 30 appearances out of the bullpen, the most on the team and third most in the Big Ten ... Finished the season 2-2 with a 2.45 ERA
Kinley tied for the team lead with six wins, all out of the bullpen, in 2012, but was forced to miss the majority of the 2013 season with blood clots.
Through his MSU career, Kinley was 12-10 with a 3.19 ERA in 93 appearances.
VanVossen is tied for seventh in MSU history in wins (21), fifth in innings pitched (290.1) and tied for eighth in strikeouts (180). He went 4-5 with a 6.00 ERA as a senior in 2015. The right-hander was named Big Ten Player of the Week for the week of April 27 after pitching a complete game, one-hitter at Indiana (4/26) with a season-high eight strikeouts.
As a junior, VanVossen was a third-team All-Big Ten selection and winner of the team's Robin Roberts Most Valuable Pitcher award. He finished the season with an 8-3 record a 2.82 ERA in team-high 15 starts, while his 2.82 ERA ranked 10th in the Big Ten. Nine of VanVossen's 15 starts were quality starts, going at least six innings and allowing three or fewer earned runs. He held opposing batters to a .227 batting average, the fourth best mark in the Big Ten.
He went 5-2 and recorded the third-lowest opponent batting average on the team at .216 in 2013. As a freshman in 2012, he was the team's top midweek starter, posting a 4-0 record with a 3.47 ERA in nine appearances and seven starts.
Salter drove in 35 or more runs for the third consecutive season, finishing 2015 with a total of 40 RBIs, which ranked second on the team. He hit .268 with a career-best six home runs.
Salter, who recorded hits in first nine of 10 games to start the year, had home runs in three of the Spartans’ biggest wins of the season. He homered in a 4-for-4 effort in an 8-6 victory over Clemson (March 11); hit a three-run homer to help MSU complete a three-game sweep of Oregon (April 5); and blasted a two-run homer into the third deck at Target Field in the opening inning of a 9-7 win over Nebraska in the Big Ten Tournament (May 21).
As a junior, Salter was a NCBWA third-team All-America selection and an All-Big Ten second team honoree. He was the winner of the Spartans' John Kobs Most Valuable Player and Kirk Gibson Offensive Player of the Year awards as he led the team and ranked third in the Big Ten with 50 RBIs. He hit .317 and his 22 doubles were the most in the Big Ten and tied MSU’s single-season record.
Salter is MSU’s all-time leader in doubles with 55 and is tied for eighth in MSU history in RBIs with 139. He owns a .305 career batting average.
Weist, a first-team All-Big Ten honoree, ranked second on the team and fifth in the Big Ten with a .346 batting average and had a team-leading 19 doubles - tied for the fifth highest single-season total in program history. The native of Saline recorded at least one hit in 47 of 57 games and ended the year on a season-long 10-game hitting streak. He started all 57 games at third base and had a team-high 24 multi-hit games. His 79 hits and 120 total bases both ranked seventh in the Big Ten.
Weist had a hit in 15 of 16 games from March 1 to March 29 and recorded a double in six straight games from April 11 to April 18.
Prior to MSU, Weist attended Spring Arbor University (NAIA) where he hit .392 in his final season.
The previous high for Spartans selected in one MLB Draft was five, which last happened in 2002.
