MLB Draft Update: Krill Selected in Ninth Round by the New York Yankees
EAST LANSING - Michigan State first baseman Ryan Krill was selected by the New York Yankees in the in the ninth round (No. 273 overall) of the 2015 Major League Baseball Draft on Tuesday evening. Krill is the second Spartan to be chosen in the 2015 MLB Draft as Cam Gibson was taken in the fifth round by Detroit.
Krill had the best season of his career in 2015 as he led the Big Ten in conference play in nearly every offensive category, including: batting average (.451), slugging percentage (.857), on-base percentage (.545), RBI (36) and home runs (10). The second-team All-Big Ten honoree’s 57 total RBI tied for the ninth-highest single season total in program history.
The Kalamazoo native posted a team-high.351 batting average and finished the season with 13 home runs, the final of which was a go-ahead grand slam that came in the eighth inning of a 9-7 win over Nebraska in the Big Ten Tournament (May 21).
From April 17 – May 16, he strung together a career-long and team season-high 19-game hitting streak. Just prior to the season-long hitting streak, he was named the Big Ten Player of the Week for the first time in his career after going 5-for-6 with six RBI in a win over Northwestern (April 12).
The three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree was named the John Kobs Most Valuable Player, the Kirk Gibson Offensive Player of the Year and the Jerry Sutton Student Athlete Award winner this past season.
Krill started 45 games as a freshman and ranked among the team leaders in several offensive categories as a sophomore, including: hits (third with 55), doubles (tied for third with 11), RBIs (tied for fourth with 25) and batting (fifth with .288 average).
Krill posted a .292 batting average, 125 RBI and 20 home runs over 218 games in his four years as a Spartan.
