Spartan Nation 2010 Basketball recruit and current Blackhawk Christian Senior Russell Byrd broke the schools basketball career scoring record of 1,320 points previously held by Josh Rang.Â

The record was broken on Tuesday in a 72-52 victory over Lakewood Park in the first round of sectional play. The Michigan State bound Byrd also holds the career rebounding record of 601 rebounds. Russell is averaging 24 points and 10 rebounds per game for the 14 – 7 Braves.

Byrd reminds many of Shawn Respert with his pure shooting and ability to make shots from just about anywhere on offense. He has also added a new commitment to defense this season ahead of his arrival in East Lansing at the behest of Spartan head coach Tom Izzo.
