Michigan State football coach Jonathan Smith continues to focus his recruiting efforts around building the Spartans' defense with talented mid-level players. Michigan State has made three-star cornerback Jayden Shipps a major priority for its 2025 recruiting cycle.

Shipps, a native of Severn, Maryland, is one of Smith's top cornerback options for the class of 2025. Justin Thind of 247Sports reports that Shipps is scheduled to take an unofficial visit to East Lansing next week. The three-star is listed as the 76th-best cornerback in 247Sports' class of 2025 rankings.

As is usually the case in recruiting, Michigan State will compete with multiple other schools for Shipps' services. However, Shipps would arguably have a more straightforward path to playing time if he chose to join Smith in East Lansing. According to 247Sports, Big Ten schools, including Wisconsin, Indiana and Maryland, have also offered Shipps a scholarship.

The Spartans will also have competition from notable schools from other conferences, including Tennessee, South Carolina and Virginia Tech.

Shipps' offers from other schools around the country, specifically from around the Big Ten, show just how highly touted he is. His importance to Michigan State is heightened because of his offers from other Big Ten schools. Not only would Michigan State be impacted from Shipps not being on its roster, there is also the potential it could end up having to play against him if he goes to another school in the conference.

Smith has rightfully prioritized Shipps as one of Michigan State's top recruits in the 2025 recruiting class. The good news for Smith is that good players like playing with other good players. Should Smith be able to secure Shipps' commitment, Shipps could become an extension of Smith in recruiting.

As Michigan State attempts to climb its way out of the cellar of the Big Ten, it will depend heavily on its ability to sign and keep players like Shipps. The teams with the most talent usually win the most games in college football. The Spartans have not won many games lately.

Properly recruiting talent and signing that quality talent to their roster are the keys to Smith turning things around in East Lansing.

The Michigan State Spartan Football Spring Green and White Game (Spring Showcase) will be held at the High Cathedral of the Spartan Nation, Spartan Stadium, on April 20, 2024, at 2 p.m.
