20 MI WR Devell Washington Talks MSU Visit

While Bay City (MI) Western 2020 wide receiver has yet to receive an offer in the recruiting process, the 6-foot-4, 200-pound standout, and #5 Michigan Stateare becoming more and more familiar with each other and Washington was on campus over the weekend for a visit in East Lansing.

Washington spoke with Spartan Nation following his visit and said that he enjoyed having the opportunity to watch a spring practice session and sit in on a position group meeting with the receivers.

“I learned a lot about how the receivers prepare in practices and in the meetings,” he said. “The practice was intense.”

Having the opportunity to spend time in the meetings is something that Washington said he used as a learning experience and admitted that he hopes to takes certain aspects he saw and use them in his own preparation moving forward at the high school level.

“The separation between the defensive backs and the receivers,” he said. “I saw a lot of receivers taking notes during film, so I observed them to use in my own game.”

During his visit, Washington said that he had the opportunity to spend time with several coaches, including receivers coach Terrence Samuel, director of player personnel and recruiting Sheldon White, offensive line coach Mark Staten and graduate assistant Jesse Johnson.

Washington said that he feels that his style of play is similar to a pair of Michigan State receivers, Felton Davis and Cody White, because of the size and physicality both players play with.

In talking with Sheldon White, Washington said that White was surprised and impressed with his size, considering he is only a high school sophomore and compared him to his son, Cody.

“What coach White said, he said ‘Son, you’re big, you’re like the size of my son already’ and when he waved me in, he was like ‘Whoa’,” he said.

Washington, who is set to make a pair of return visits over the next couple of months, the first for the Michigan State spring game and for the Michigan State elite camp in June, said that he was more than impressed with Michigan State’s facilities and feels he would fit in well in East Lansing.

“It’s my favorite spot, the facilities are crazy, it’s just amazing,” he said. “It’s gigantic, it fits me.”
