The War Room: Go Inside#15 Michigan State Football

East Lansing, MI

Over my course of many years covering Michigan State Athletics I get many nuggets of information from sources cultivated over years and in some cases decades. While those nuggets individually may not be worthy of an article, I place them together in what we like to call The War Room! So it back and enjoy the latest up to the moment addition right now.

  • Spartan Nation can break the news that WMU DCTim Daoust has been notified that he is not going to get the MSU defensive ends coaching job.
  • Spartan Nation can also break who Dantonio is hiring. We have learned from sources at WMU and confirmed with sources inside the Michigan State Athletic Department that former Spartan great Chuck Bullough has been hired to replace Mark Snyder. An immediate and massive upgrade.
  • Spartan Nation also broke the news that Bullough was a candidate.
  • I have been told to expect an announcement as early as Tuesday or as late as Wednesday.
  • Bullough is an experienced coach, a dedicated football junky and as one power five head coach told Spartan Nation today, “A helluva coach.”
  • Bullough will be the lone Spartan alumni on the staff. He has extensive experience and is considered a master teacher and an expert schemer. In the Michigan State system that loves input from the staff in game planning he will be invaluable.
  • Speaking of defensive end that is going to be the weal spot on the Spartan roster next season. Now do not read into the words, “Weak spot” and assume that there isn’t talent. They are very young. You saw how good a young defensive tackle unit was and flourished under the amazing work of a seasoned coach like Ron Burton.
  • Now you add a seasoned coach like Bullough and you can expect this unit to flourish as well. Great teaching and plenty of talent will be special.
  • Jack Camper is such a special athlete. He has a major upside at DE and TE. What most people don’t know is that Dantonio with his staff has a use them or lose them mentality. Simply meaning if a player that you are coaching isn’t playing and another coach thinks he can use him, he gets him. I expect him to get a look at DE this spring. That is not saying his days at TE are officially over, far from it, but he is too talented to not be in the field.
  • Speaking of use them or lose them, remember the name Trent Gillison. He committed to MSU early for the 2018 class. He is a great player. OSU tried to come in on him as well as several other highly thought of programs and he never wavered. I know for fact that Urban Meyer thought he had elite DE possibilities and the Buckeyes wanted him for that. When he shows up this summer if he can’t get into the TE rotation quick I expect Bullough to covet him on the DL. Gillison, like Camper is too good of an athlete not to play.
  • Spartan Nation spoke with one of his former DL players who told us about his style, “He is so intense. He may not be 22, but I don’t think anyone on our defensive line doubted that he could put the pads on and kick any of our asses. He is so driven. He teaches the game by making it simple and repetitive. He will find the guys that love football and have a heart for it. At Michigan State you will have a lot higher stars, but if you don’t love it he won’t play you. He is more intense than any player and you can always walk in at any time and watch film with him. He taught me how to love football. He will weed out the posers, because he is a workaholic and he always talks about a degree. To him he coaches every part of your life. Not just football. He is an intense dude that will not tolerate anything less than great effort in everything.”
