Love to see what coach D is doing with the recruits and the program - couldn't be prouder of MSU football. Any insights you can provide on the offensive line recruiting? From the outside, seems to be an area we are struggling with landing recruits, but I am guessing there is more to the story behind the scenes. any feedback you are able to share? Chris

Great question Chris. The Spartans are not the same old Spartans and I get a kick out of the, “Panic” that some are displaying. The Spartans have several very good OL. Several. They will take elite players, but they are being very picky. Reminds me of an old adage that rumors of their demise are very over rated.

Hey Hondo, New question for you, on redshirts. If a true freshman comes in and is the backup quarterback, for example, and gets a lot of reps in practice and is the backup for all the games. he is still eligible for a redshirt? Does he have to get on the field? If he takes one snap does he lose that redshirt? Thanks for any help in that. Dan Moss

Dan this is a funny question. When JLS was the coach here he would openly talk about playing all the freshman in the first three games and then in his words, “Finding,” and injury to red shirt them. If a player plays in the first three games, but is then injured he can redshirt. Many programs play the game, play them and see who sticks before, “Finding” and injury.

 

Coach D takes the high road. If there is a legitimate injury he will claim it, but if you take even one snap and you’re not injured, you don’t red shirt. I double checked today with MSU SID John Lewandowski to make sure the rule was still three games and it is. That has not changed.

I hope they are going to make Spartan stadium more Spartan, i.e. Corinthian columns, etc. Do you think the overall university would support this type of architecture? The statues Duffy, biggie, bubba etc. would also look great in that style. Tom

I sure am getting this question a lot. MSU athletics has a ton of priorities and needs. None of them on the “need” list are cosmetic. With each and every new addition or build they are of course addressing the cosmetic, but they will get to other cosmetic things down the line. Right now need is the priority.

Hondo, I was wondering what position LT will be playing this year for the Spartans. I know that he wants to play LB, but he appears to be way to heavy (290 at last check) and we have enough depth at that position. Will he be able and happy to make a move to DE? Sean

LT wants to play. LT is not able at 290 to play the LB spot. We have told you at Spartan Nation for over a year that he would eventually end up with is hand in the dirt. A saying for the DE spot. He will compete for some time at DE and with his athleticism; they might play him as a standup DE in SOME places, such as
their chaos package.

 

Is it concerning to you that L. Thomas is weighing 290lbs? (so I hear) What are your thoughts? Thanks for all you do. Brett

Not at all.  If you had seen him this summer you would know his frame can take it. He is a monster and a young man who can make the plays.
