Hondo, in your opinion, how many more commitments will we take in the 2014 football recruiting class? Also, what positions are MD and staff still looking to get firm up with commitments? I would think WR is now a priority along with another D lineman. Tim Ward

Mark Dantonio told me late summer that they would go 20. They could stretch that to 21 and MAYBE 22 for the right player, BUT that would have to be a high level/immediate impact guy. They need another DL, OL, and WR. Doesn’t mean that is what they get, but they would love to fill the class out that way.

 

Do you think MSU will be waiting till January now to put the finishing touches on its recruiting class for '14? It would seem that there are only 4-5 more spots and several of the kids have said they will announce at the "all star" games or will MSU pull the trigger and let the star heavy guys go somewhere else? Go Green. Please see above answer, but ideally they would love to fill it much sooner than that.

 

Hondo, any chance we are smart enough to make Narduzzi the coach in waiting and double his pay? If he leaves for a BCS head coaching job and takes the best of the defensive staff with him it would hurt.  If we doubled his pay, he and Dantonio combined would still make less than Ferentz, O'Brien, Hoke, and Meyer make by themselves, and just barely more than Pelini makes. The administration needs to live up to their "invest in champions" motto. Grant Crago

Any chance? Sure there is a chance. If MSU is serious they must make the investment. Fast. In today’s America, many have an attack those that have succeeded mentality and it is difficult for some to see a man making $500,000 as considerably underpaid. If you are a capitalist, like I am, and believe the market sets the value I am correct. If the RIGHT job comes, he will leave. Doing what you suggest may set the bar much higher for the right job however and I support it.

 

The commentary by the ESPN commentator said it would be our defense against OSU’s offense in the championship game. Do you agree with that statement? Jerry Kadlechick

No. I think MSU D can do well against OSU offense. They will score some points, but my question is how many can the MSU offense score. We know what the D will do; that game the offense will have to go on the attack.

 

 

Every week I read the Q&A, you suggest that coach D play another quarterback. Perhaps you could point out in the past 3-4 Big Ten games when you would have inserted the second string quarterback. Coach D seems to know what he's doing, don't you think. I don't see Saban playing a second string quarterback in the first half of his games. Chris Pytel

I do agree that Coach D knows what he is doing. He is the one saying he needs to do it and isn’t. Perhaps you should secure his email and ask him why he doesn’t. He has sold me, perhaps he hasn’t you.

 

Hi Hondo, we entered the season with four of our top five LBers as seniors (M. Bullough, Allen, Elsworth and J. Jones) and moved two others to RB (R. Bullough and Delton Williams). This only leaves us with three for next season with any experience - Taiwan Jones, Ed Davis, and Darien Harris. Do you think we'll move back Riley or Delton or can the three above along with R-FR Reschke and Shane Jones carry the load despite a lack of experience? I would not be shocked if Riley moved back. I can tell you that there is some frustration from the defensive coaches that Riley was moved to offense and isn’t being utilized.Â

 

Hondo...regardless of the proficiency of any offensive line, why do so many DCs/Head Coaches opt for "prevent" and give ample time for even an average QB to throw the bomb with no time remaining? Do you think that the normally snarling Narduzzi would ever opt to "prevent" again (in previous years, I recall such a plan and cringed with visions of being on the other side of Cousins to Nichol)? A Narduzzi prevent is a little bit different. When he uses it, he often rolls his defenders out at the snap so the QB doesn’t have much time to adapt. I hate the prevent. I do like how Pat does it, but the prevent in general, in my opinion, prevents winning.

 

Hondo, if you had to take the coordinators out of the running who would be your MVP assistant on offense and defense? Brad

Defense:  they all have been great for so long, but the job Rob Burton has done with the DL is NOTHING short of amazing. He came in and fit with this staff like a hand and glove. On offense, I would say Brad Salem has really brought Connor Cook along, but the OL is the place to be with Mark Staten. The MSU OL is dominating.

Great question, but trust me the answer is no. The captains made sure of it and so did the staff. Their vision has roses and they are all business right now. They got away this weekend, but they have Lincoln on their mind. Last year the Huskers changed this team. I will talk about it on the radio this week and in my column on Friday. Don’t miss how.
