Breaking News from Spartan Nation: Mark Dantonio Lands Commit #11 for the 2013 Class DT Devyn Salmon

At 8 PM EST tonight, Devyn Salmon, the 6’1” 290# monster DT from Plant City, FL, called Mark Dantonio to pledge to the Green and White for the 2013 recruiting class. He became Dantonio’s 11th commitment for this class. As soon as he got off the phone with his new coach, he contacted Spartan Nation.

We were the first to report that he has committed to Dantonio, and the Spartans got a good one. The humble Salmon was on Spartan Nation Radio late last week and was
looking forward to this moment.

He told me that when he told his family of his decision to pledge to MSU, “They were just happy jumping up and down and crying.  I am going to be the first of my family to go to college and I am going to get that degree.  It is great to get to play football, but I am going to get a degree. I am just really humbled right now.”

Dantonio’s reaction mirrored his family. Salmon told me about Dantonio’s reaction to hearing the good news. “He was just happy, he told me, ‘I am just really glad you’re
a Spartan.’ We were both so happy and excited. It meant a lot to both of us.”

Salmon’s primary recruiter will come as no surprise. He is one of the best on the MSU staff. That is legendary Spartan football ICON Harlon “DA BANG STICK” Barnett. It was
his recruiting style that really impressed Salmon. He told me of Barnett, “Harlon Barnett has really become like a father figure to me. He gives me motivation. That is
what I love about him. He is the one that really got me to go there.”

Salmon has yet to step foot on the MSU campus, but he plans to do that soon. “I will be up there on September 15 (Notre Dame weekend), and I can’t wait to meet all the staff and
see the campus.”

Salmon has only met Barnett in person, but Coach Narduzzi and Dantonio over the phone have aligned with Barnett to make a big impact already. Salmon said, ““The coaches, they were all over my case. They were just a family. I felt the love and wanted to be a part of that. It was different from everywhere else that talked to me. It was just love. Not just for me, but about the program, each other and everything.”

Salmon knows MSU player Denzel Drone and he gave high praise for what Drone said of his choice to be a Spartan. “He can’t stop telling me what it is like. He loves it there. They are family. They don’t talk about it, they are. He told me if I do my part they can get me to the league, just like Jerel (Worthy) and he loves it.”

Salmon is a great football player, but that doesn’t define him. This young man stands for character and will attack the books as hard as QBs.  Welcome to the Spartan Nation Devyn!
