Spartan WR DeAnthony Arnett Talks About Where He Stands So Far This Spring
DeAnthony Arnett MSU WR recently spoke to the media. Having been such a highly recruited player from the state of Michigan, many Spartan fans have a big interest in him and his career. Here is how that conversation transpired.
Q: How’s the spring ball?
A: It’s going good.
Q: What’s been the difference for you or what’s been good for you?
A: Just playing faster. That’s pretty much it.
Q: What did last year do for you? What did it teach you? I mean obviously the transition and everything you went through.
A: Just preparing me for this year. I’m just working harder. That’s pretty much it, going into this season.
Q: Was it more difficult than you thought?
A: No.
Q: The receiving group, what do you guys need to get out of this spring?
A: Just need to make plays. That’s the next step, just making plays. We’ve got the offense down pat. Just make plays.
Q : What’s this spring been like for you (re: system and adversity you faced last year)?
A: This spring has been okay. I’m just trying to get better every day. Just coming here, trying to prepare myself, work hard and have a good spring game.
Q: Coach always says self-evaluation is most important when you think about getting better. What did you evaluate? What came out of that for you?
A: My evaluation all the time is just…every time I come out here just work hard. That’s pretty much it. Just work hard and make plays. I mean there’s nothing more… That’s for any player. Come out here and make plays and get yourself on the field.
Q: Was it difficult last year, was it a difficult experience?
A: No. I was in my zone and my role was my role. To add more depth to the team.
Q: What can you do to help the team going forward?
A: Make plays.
Q: Do you see a playmaker on the field, a breakaway threat?
A: You’ve been covering me for a long time. Come on now. Come on now.
Q: I just wanna know what’s going on in your mind.
A: Just work hard. In my mind, just work hard and make plays. That’s the only thing that’s going on in my mind.
Q: Because of the situation last year, do you feel like everything is wide open, just because nobody really separated themselves so to speak?
A: I think we all know what we’re up against. I think we all know coming into the season, especially losing a lot of production from Le’Veon that they’re gonna need all of us to step up. Pretty much no way around it. We just all gotta step up, make plays and get touchdowns.
Q: As a unit, production…I mean that was a lot lost between Keshawn and BJ, then it all kind of fell onto Le’Veon. Do you see the role increasing for the receivers in terms of picking up what you lose with Le’Veon or what you need to get back to get back to where BJ was?
A: No. I mean, what I feel is… We ran the ball a lot last year. We got out there and blocked him. We opened a lot of things up for Le’Veon. So, of course we’re missing that. Back to the question, like I said from the beginning, we need to go out there and make plays and show that we can be an elite unit.
Q: How much was that a concentration in the off season, not just from maybe the coaches but from you guys talking amongst yourselves?
A: We’ve just been putting in work, extra work, all the time. Especially during the off season. We got nothing to do, all of us are here. Running reps with the quarterback, getting our timing down and making plays.
Q: How much was it too last year not having a familiarity with each other? Because that was one of the things that Cousins talked about…his connection with BJ and Keshawn. How much of it was that last year?
A: Well, we were a little bit inexperienced. Especially with a lot of new faces playing on offense. This year it will be different.
Q: The drops, is that something that…
A: We’re gonna get that taken care of. That won’t be an issue this year, for no one.
Q: What do you think it was? The timing thing or inexperience, new quarterback, new receiver?
A: No, we’ll be good this year. We don’t wanna talk about drops.
Q: Put more stick’em on your gloves? A new set of gloves coming from Nike that…
A: No, just make plays. That’s pretty much it. Go out there, take the ball and make plays.
Q: Because of maybe people looking at it might not be as much of a running offense because of Le’Veon and Larry and other people gone, does that maybe take the offense to another level?
A: No, we still run the ball. That’s pretty much been Michigan State’s MO ever since Coach D’s been here. Run the ball, run the ball. That ain’t gonna ever change. Run the ball and we gotta go out there an block.
