Spartan Nation caught up with LB commit Taiwan Jones earlier this week. This young man gave a verbal commitment to Coach Dantonio earlier this year for the class of 2011.

 

One of the first things asked to Taiwan on the show was about his weight. Taiwan told Spartan Nation that he has gained “15 more pounds” to his big frame since we last reported, weighing him in at 220 lbs! He told Spartan Nation that Coach Mannie is giving him more advice on how to add more weight to that already chiseled frame. Taiwan says he wants to be 230-235 lbs by the time he steps on to the MSU campus. When he arrives on campus a red shirt is likely, although physically he will be ready to compete! My new nickname for Taiwan Jones is ‘The Hammer!’ 

 

We have talked about his size; now let’s talk about his talent. Taiwan is another good addition for the Spartans. Having played receiver and running back on the offensive side of the ball, he is most valued on the football field on defense.

 

This linebacker has all the God given talent and measurements to play and compete at a high level. It was great when the Hammer has been lauded for how he practices, and this is what he told Spartan Nation. “I just do not want to take reps off, and I want to get better every single play.” Those words have got to be music to the coaches’ ears. How many times have you heard a 17 year-old young man talk about getting better in practice?

 

Taiwan told Spartan Nation that his best intangibles on the football field are his instincts to find the ball especially on defense. He told us that the thing he needs to work on is his flexibility. Taiwan hopes to play the SAM linebacker when he arrives at MSU because of his speed. I would have to agree with him. In my opinion, pin his ears back and let him fly to the ball! Could you imagine this 6’3” 230-235lb linebacker flying at you with a 4.48 second 40-yard dash speed ready to take your head off? I know some football players would be ducking for cover when the Hammer roams the field!

 

Taiwan says that although he can’t wait to play on Saturdays here at MSU he is going to enjoy his last season as a senior at Anchor Bay High School in New Baltimore, MI. When Taiwan enrolls at MSU he said he plans on pursuing a criminal justice or communications degree.

 

Taiwan’s family means a lot to him. He loves his family, and he loves that his family and friends support him at all of his games.
