MSU Baseball Gears up for Crosstown Showdown

The Michigan State baseball team will play its annual Crosstown Shown against the Lansing Lugnuts Wednesday.

It's that time of year again when the Michigan State baseball team heads to Jackson Field to take on the high-A affiliate of the Oakland A's, the Lansing Lugnuts, in the annual Crosstown Showdown.

Wednesday's seven-inning exhibition game will be the 16th time the two teams have met for the event. The event had a two-year hiatus in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The inaugural meeting was held in 2007.

The Lugnuts have won the last 10 match-ups between the two teams, including a 12-3 blowout last year.

Gates will open at 5 p.m., with first pitch set for 6:05 p.m. The first 1,000 attendees will be gifted giveaway jerseys presented by Delta Dental, who is sponsoring the event. Attendees will also have the opportunities to receive autographs from select Spartan players before the game. Sparty, the Michigan State spirit squad, and the Michigan State marching band will all be at Wednesday's event.

Michigan State is 12-14 overall (3-3 in conference play). Its game against Notre Dame that had originally been scheduled for Tuesday was postponed due to weather.

The Spartans recently won the final two games of their three-game series against Rutgers to close out the month of March.

Following Wednesday's game, the Lugnuts will head to Dayton to take on the Dayton Dragons on Friday for their first game of the season. It will be the first of a three-game series. The Lugnuts will then return to Lansing for their home opener against the Great Lakes Loons on Tuesday.

Notes about the game:

Michigan State pitching coach Mark Van Ameyde will be absent as he rehabilitates from a successful kidney transplant last month.

Harrison Cook is slated as the Spartans' probable pitcher to start on the mound. He is 0-1 this season, with a 6.52 ERA.
