Michigan State Recruiting Coach Brian Wozniak Enjoying Recruiting in the Midwest

Michigan State tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator and former Wisconsin tight end Brian Wozniak is back in the Midwest after almost a decade out west.

While several of Michigan State football's new coaches have come over from Oregon State, some, like tight ends coach and recruting coordinator Brian Wozniak, have returned to familiar territory.

Wozniak, who played tight end at Wisconsin before his nine seasons of coaching at OSU, is already enjoying the process of re-establishing a once thriving recruiting culture in the Midwest.

"I'm from Ohio, right?," Wozniak told reporters after the Spartans' spring practice on Thursday. "I go back to thinking when this place was rolling, a lot of that roster was Michigan guys in bulk, but there were a lot of Ohio guys in bulk, too. And again, we can't take everybody at Michigan, we can't take everybody at Ohio -- surrounding areas, right? -- but we want to be aggressive in those areas. So that's been fun diving into it and looking into it and, again, kind of showing this place what we can do."

Wozniak has been pleased with the reception MSU has received from high schools in Ohio throughout his recruiting process so far.

"I think it's been good," Wozniak said. "A lot of: 'Hey, it's great to see Sparty back in schools.' Just old stories and being able to mix it up. Sometimes, I got some connections to that coach, that we would need before going into the school. So, it's been fun that way.

"And I think it's been good kind of painting these Midwest states in green a little bit. Letting guys know, 'Hey, we're here.'"

While Wozniak spent his college career at Wisconsin, he was actually recruited by Michigan State back in the day, but it ultimately did not work out.

Wozniak had four successful seasons in Madison, where he faced the Spartans several times.

Recruiting is going to be big for Michigan State under this new regime, and Wozniak seems more than ready for the challenge. His connections from the Midwest should help the Spartans significantly when they go up against other Big Ten powerhouses in the Midwest (e.g., Michigan and Ohio State).

Gaining some control of the territory would surely help put Michigan State football back on the map.

The Michigan State Spartan Football Spring Green and White Game (Spring Showcase) will be held at the High Cathedral of the Spartan Nation, Spartan Stadium, on April 20, 2024, at 2 p.m.
